I need help overclocking my GeIL Ultra Platinum PC 3200 (DDR 400) @ 2-3-3-6 1T. On my Jetway motherboard, I was able to get it to ~250Mhz stable at 3-4-4-9 1T, but now, on my DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D, no matter what timings I try (2-3-3-6, 2.5-3-3-8, or 3-4-4-9) I can't get it past 210Mhz Memtest86 stable. What should I do?

You need to first verify that you have the latest BIOS. Next, I would definately play with async latency, see if you can work this way. Make sure your memomry are in the orange slots. I've got the same board and with kingston value memory, and YES I can overclock them easily. 3-3-3-8 1T shouldn't be a problem with your memory up to 250mhz. Try everything on auto, see what it does. Get the values from A64info or systools, write them down. Then go back in your bios and put the values in, then tweak.

Gimme news! You can tweak any memory modules to perfection with a board like you have. Just arm yourself with patience and curiosity.

what Ics does your geil have?

ICS?

My BIOS is from 4/6/06, which I think is the latest "official" BIOS from DFI...so should I set everything to auto, except 2-3-3-6 1T?

by ICs i mean integrated cuircits. the little chips both sides of the memory stick, whats on them?

They're covered by a heatspreader...you want me to take it out?

Yeah, you would have to remove the heat spreader; but they go back on just as easily. They use spacers (or little sticky double sided spongy things) to hold them on.

Would it make a big difference if you knew my IC? Would anything differ if I removed it and put it back on (as in will it get damaged or will the heatspreaders still be fine?)

Well, it wouldnt make a difference if I knew it, but like most ICs and PCBs and stuff of that sort(yeah I used to work on SMT and wave solders and all that stuff awhile back, so I know ma'stuff) they all have difference product numbers and such, so each has its own naming system, like SKU or CONTROL numbers, etc.
Nothing would differ if you removed them, but due make sure to put them back on. They wont get damaged and your heat spreaders will be fine. So you will be fine with taking them off, put your trust in me :)

If you take out your heat spreader, you might also unsolder some chips and basically break perfectly good ram modules. I don't have the GEIL modules. But anyway, DFI mobos have all the parms layed out. You just need to find the right parms to tweak to enable proper overclocks.

You'll eventually find the sweat spots.

Ketxxx isn't on right now though, and he works for a memory company so I think he would know all about my GeIL's IC and all...

Anyways, what else should I do to make sure it overclocks high?

I checked the overclocking database (on DFI Street), and I put the recommended timings and such for my kind of memory, and still nothing...It's on *Auto* right now, but I haven't tried overclocking on *Auto* yet...should I try it?

I really like this board, but just a pain to setup and all...so many people complain about how sometimes it's unstable, but it even lists at DFI that the settings (for memory) are for low-end stuff, so it might be unstable unless you tweak it...

Auto, just uses the JEDEC timings built into the ram ics themselves and sets it that way. If you want to overclock, you have to manually tweak them, auto doesnt do that. Im not sure if your board has AUTOmatic settings for overclocking ram by a certain percent or not, like most mobos have for pcs. I would wait for Ketxxx though as he is most certainly the expert. You will need to give him your IC info though, unless you got something with the packaging that gives details.

My package was just a cool case with memory, that's it...

I'm gonna loosen timings to the ones shown on DFI Street, then I'll check...this is pissing me off...

Man, on the DFI motherboards there is a lot more than just the normal timings that you can mess with.

There is so many memory options I can't even name them all. You need to start messing with those...

Go to DFI street forums and post... someone can surely help you out.

It takes patience...which I barely have?

Yea, you gotta "learn" those boards man. That's why I like this Asus board, VERY simple, yet, sophisticated at the same time.

My old roomate had an Ultra-D..... you can get lost in the memory settings lol. Needless to say, he had to do a lot of studying, and eventually figured out what all of those settings are and started giving it hell :D

They are really nice motherboards, DFI is awesome.

Everything else I get, but the memory just seems so complicated, and I don't feel like reading the whole guide at DFI Street...oh well...I guess I'll have to...
