Help setting up crossfire!

im soooo confused when i try and have 2 cards in and boot i get a post then when i go to start windows after it does its little Microsoft Corp load bar thing i get a blue screen and says computer will be restarting so you do not corrupt something and other it gives you like 2 seconds to read but when i have 1 card i can get into windows fine. could something be broken?

EDIT: ok got everything hooked up installed drivers but it wont install CCC it keeps getting an error

at this stage i'd be suggesting going back to the legit asus bios for your board, and reinstalling windows.

sure, its a pain in the ass... but at least it should solve the problem.

ok i just went back to the latest normal ASUS bios for mb just noticed that my new card has a updated bios should i update my older card to these? would it fix the problem?

Older Sapphire 4850 ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER011.004.000.000.000000
Newer Sapphire 4850 ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER011.014.000.003.000000
I bolded the difference. I used RBE to check the difference and there are changed settings

yes, update the BIOS.

we've had two threads with gigabyte cards where a BIOS update fixed the issues, so its worth a shot.

can someone tell me or send me to a thread that shows how to flash bios what program to use. should i do this in safe mode? how many video cards should i have in? and if im going to be flashing bios should i just use some really good one?

you should flash in DOS, not in windows. one a time would be simplest.

2nd card obviously has a driver problem, it has a 48GHz core clock and no ram.

show us a screenshot of device manager, focusing on the two cards.
bug:laugh:

I have had the best luck installing drivers when running crossfire by doing basically this every time.

Uninstall old drivers with Catalyst install manager (Unless after format and OS install)

Shut the computer down

Install Video Cards, With both bridges on. I figure two cant possibly be worse then one

Boot, Install new drivers, reboot and you are good to go.

I personally have never experienced any issues with crossfire, well on my current platform anyway

I (and several others) do the following.

Install drivers.
Reboot. all works.

These problems with crossfire are always turning up to be the same thing: the makers of the cards didnt follow the reference design with the BIOS, and it takes a BIOS fix to make them work in crossfire on current drivers.

Yeah It seems to me that crossfire works the best when both cards are identical from the same company. I briefly had a pair of mis-matched 4850s and it took forever to get them working in crossfire.

probely a dumb question but how do i get into dos? and do i have to know special codes to get a round?

Go to your motherboard manufacture's website and download the latest BIOS and save it to USB drive or a floppy disk. Turn off your PC, have only one gpu installed, and boot up from the USB drive or Floopy drive to begin the update.

Updating your bios in windows can be done, but it's very shoddy and not suggested by most.

EDIT: Your mobo may not support a USB device to boot from so try starting with the floppy disk.

im talkin about updating my bios for my Graphics card i got my bios for mb done it has a built in flash feture for its self

you need to make a bootable DOS disk.

feck it, i'll just upload my one.

See attachments - it should have everything you need, and usable instructions.

(sometimes things that seem piss simple to me, are complicated for others... so there may be omissions, let me know)

:footinmouth

Sorry for giving blind help.

So for gpu flashing I'm going to pass the torch on this. I've never done it but usually the manufacture will have the latest version and/or a program to help flash it. RBE can help with pulling, editing, and flashing the card. Good luck with things! :toast:

GPU flashing is easy. make a DOS boot disk (see ZIP file), run whatever file you want to run.

for ATI flash its as simple as (see below)

ATIFLASH -p x romfile.rom

x is the number of the card (for example, in crossfire 0 would be master, 1 would be slave) and romfile.rom is the name of the file you want to flash

so for a 4850 it would be ATIFLASH -p 1"for 1 card?" bios.rom

My bios for it are called bios

see? people cant get instructions i think are foolproof!

0 is the first card. it starts with 0 and counts up.
Crossfire its 0 for master, 1 for slave.

Normal cards it starts from 0.

so for a SINGLE 4850
ATIFLASH -p 0 bios.rom

oh ok got it thanks sorry im at school in class litle distracted

nope just normal high school we go got 2 days left we had like 6 snow days so we had o make them up

Damn a full week of snow day make up classes, that must suck!

Hope the flashing goes alright!

You can put atiflash -i to make sure you know which is which too.

can i just use ATIwinFlash for my bios? im not for sure i can do the dos thing

Nope, it will most likely brick your card. Flashing in DOS is a must!
