OCZ Technology this week opened up a public beta test of its SPD-Z utility. The SPD-Z utility allows users to reprogram the SPD chip on OCZ memory modules. The SPD chip on memory modules contains information of the module’s capabilities, such as speed and latencies.

Meh only for OCZ rams.

there is spd tool made by w1z that work for every brand

That is awesome, OCZ kicks ass:rockout: I wish I would have stayed with them on my C2D setup instead of trying G skills.

Yes but Wizz's SPD tool doesnt work in Vista and aint effective with all memory sticks so OCZ is a better solution for people that have OCZ sticks.

Who cares about Vista support? You reprogram the modules once from BartPE or something and then you're done, new settings work in Vista.

Just out of curiosity, what's the benefits of reprogramming your ram's SPD? I mean, why would you want to?

It does work in vista now. Vista x64 too, i've been playing with a pre-release of it.

Wile E: Imagine if you will, you buy ram capable of say, 4-4-4-15 timings.
For some reason, your bios (shitty store bought?) doesnt allow manual timing control, and reads the SPD of 5-5-5-18 (which is on the SPD for compatibility reasons)

Lo and behold, change the SPD to 4-4-4-15, and it will boot at those settings.

You could have DDR333 2.5-3-3-8 ram that works/overclocks 400 @ 3-4-4-10, same thing - change it and it now works on systems that have to auto detect.

Ahh, haden't thought of that. I've never had a board that didn't allow timing adjustments, so it never occured to me. Thanx. :toast:

Also some boards won't oc to their max when you set the mem manually useing the SPD allows these boards to clock up better;)

It appears to only be a tool for reading & writing the spd, not actually editing it yourself, there will be a server with other profiles on there, but i get a 404 error when checking for my ram atm, w1zz's tool can be used to edit the file it backs up, but then it can read and write the file directly too.
Oh well, heres hoping there will be some good profiles on there once its actually released

^^ one would hope that the 'profiles' could save you the time of doing it youself when working on clients rigs .. other wise Wizz's tool is the best
