how much is my ddr2 ecc fb ram holding my gaming performance back?

Hey everyone, quick question my ram is ddr2 ecc fb dimms, and I was wondering much of a bottleneck it would be versus ddr3 ram. I have researched this on google and watched some linus tech tip vidoes and they said there wasnt much of a difference between ddr2 and 3 ram in gaming give or take a couple of frames per second.

I still wanted to ask since I always get accurate information from this forum.

Your whole platform is holding you back in gaming, the RAM is the least of your concerns.

It's probably a capable platform, but you'll do much better with a newer CPU. The ram probably isn't that big of a deal, but DDR3 coupled with a newer CPU would certainly help in a gaming situation (which is usually single/dual threaded at best, so IPC really matters).

I cant. motherboard is oem and the ram is running at there max settings. I would love to move to a core I7 but I cant afford it right now. maybe next year I will be able to do so.

You dont need an i7 for gaming, an i5 is plenty. If youre on a budget though even a higher tier i3 4x4x with HT will totally beat AMDs hexacore CPUs when it comes to gaming unless the game is heavily multithreaded, even so, the i3 will still put on a good show

Ok so jester what's holding me back? I know I need to upgrade my video card soon even though it still gives me pretty good performance @1080p in every game I have on my pc including far cry 4, gta 5 and crysis 3 for example.

Now I'm not running these games maxed out 60 fps but they run and look pretty damn good considering the age of my hardware. Especially crysis 3 which I can run most settings at v high as long as I keep shaders at high (which kills fps for little image quality gain) and I keep Smaa at 2x and I get 35 to 60 fps with an average of 40.

Basically my pc gets me console quality graphics and performance yes I would like more but I'm happy for the time being il eventually upgrade or build me a new rig though.

Sorry for the huge wall of texts and any grammitcal errors. I'm posting from my phone in the hospital and it's been a long day.

No problem. Its not one thing but rather the whole board. Like you say, its not bad it just that the board is 7 years old. There have been a number of advances that effect throughput. Not to mention its a server

Agreed with this but would like to add a faster CPU will also assist in games as well as non ECC Ram, which I believe is slightly slower due to error correction.
With that platform, a fast processor (3.5Ghz or higher) and a decent GPU such as a GTX970, games would be much more playable.

Yes it will outperform your CPU - Dont forget that your CPU is the server grade equivalent of a Q9650 While its a solid CPU it cant keep up with newer tech.

the top or mid range tier i3's with HTs are generally very very efficient and they will provide more than enough grunt for any games unless they are super highly multi-threaded. If you have the top of the range i3, I dont see that CPU being a problem for gaming for another year or two and by that time you'll probably already saved up some cash to get an i5

If you click on my link and click the '4330' - its still 45% faster than your current Xeon

I'd say your GTX 570 is your current bottleneck. Yeah, DDR3 would be nice but you still have 8Gb of DDR2 - nothing to sneeze at. And with your current 800W PSU, you would not have to worry about upgrading power to support a new graphics card. So you could buy a nice new card (and I agree the GTX 970 would be a good choice) now to carry you over until a new computer is in the budget.

That said, many would be very happy with your current setup.

In almost all current games, yes. More cores makes no difference in almost all current(and past) games. Games like 1 or 2 really fast cores, any extra cores after that are wasted.

Your setup would be great for things like rendering video, but for games the dual-cpu and 8-cores don't help you one bit.
