I have a buid thats used for something very specific and not online. Im not ready to let it go yet. I think the cpu is out. says "this cpu not supported" when it posts before going to windows

pretty cheap used cpu for 8320. biut im wondering how easy it is to flash a 6000fx chip to seem as 8320fx?

The bios is shot. Try a recover flash or just leave it alone because the recovery may brick it.

FX series were all laser cut IIRC so there was no way of "unlocking" as there was with the previous Phenom generations.

As above I suspect there is a BIOS problem. In BIOS what is the CPU being reported as?

Also what version of Windows are you trying to use?

windows 7. it is an offline pc for 4 years now. let me get into bios and see whats happening. its 3 months since ive touched it. but the pc does something specific I need

Tried bios reset, new battery as it's an older machine and reseating the CPU?

I think you are right. when it goes nuts with "this cpu is not supported" , I pull out the bios battery. let it sit. sometimes 30 minutes sometimes its not enough and will only post the next day. and its a new battery

it does go into bios but thats multiple tries. ill get new bios and try to flash. otherwise will find am3 used board. I still want to use this pc for my specific purpose I need.

Asus board?

Impossible. FX doesn't core unlock like the Phenoms did.

I think gigabyte. ill update this post. great help. and very much appreciated SB
It's a thing. My Asus boards (a couple of em) did thr same thing over time. Had a few bioses go bad where the board still worked, but with quirks.

A few blocks go bad on the chip. You might be able to order a new bios chip and solder it on for a few bucks. Not sure if BiosDepot is still on ebay, but I've used them in the past. Will send you w/e bios version you want preflashed too.

FX are not unlockable like Phenom 2s

IIRC, there was some mistakes FX63x0 with 8 cores and Ryzen 5 1600 with 8c/16t but those were not unlock, simply mistakenly released to the wild. After Phenoms, there was no soft-unlocking with UCC-like features.

again, thanks for all the help. very kind of you.
ok so its gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P FX.

as I said, bios does come up. the pc has had the cmos battery out for some time so it would boot, but when we had a power out, so many times it wouldnt boot and Id have to wait a few days. it is loading now. I didnt install the drive though but anyway.
the bios says it was july 13 2017 and F1 version.

the bios versions available here is only 1

says july 14. so 1 day difference but still the same version. maybe its better I get a used board and be done with it? or use the qflash and try to flash it again with the bios on the site?
on one hand I have nothing to lose to flash it. but I should take it out. maybe look closer at the board, clean the dust. its pretty caked on. and see. if not plan b then order ?:

Try reflashing it. Could be some issue with the bios, "data rot" or something similar.

I have a few am3/+ boards great times with phenom II's

Were you running any sort of overclock on this system before the issues?

It may be just edging into the degredation/aging out of the CPU being able to run at that speed after so long.

yea, the pc pulled me through good times when I was down and really low on funds. now im just low on funds. I think ill try to flash it as you say @Ruru

cheers. awesome guys (and girls too?) here. ill update.

I wouldn't bother. It's on it's last legs already. You have trouble just getting into bios even. One day, it's just gonna stop posting and that'll be that.

Consider upgrade the entire thing or replace the board. In my humble opinions of course.

ill try to flash. see how it goes. at worse ill get the board I posted above.

why do they go bad? fatigue from electricity over years of use?

Don't know the exact cause. Crappy batches of bios chips if I had to guess. Possibly heat after time of use.

GA-970A-DS3P FX
Ah, the GA-970A-DS3P. Yeah no wonder you have issues. Corrupt BIOS every few reboots or so and forced to "recover" (auto-flash) it? Can't lock BCLK? Gigglebyte. ☑
There's so much junk like this out in the wild. My rack caught this plague too. All because I got a little too wild with my Biostar board.

This is the EOL norm. Borderline acceptable because nobody cares about FX but in my case, this was a really good pairing.
When it was my main, it was FX-8370, RX 580 and 16GB DDR3-2133. Made it possible to sustain my VR campaign for a year until Ryzen.
Whatever you do, don't let it go. We don't get any more redo options and those FX chips are more precious that gold by 2030.
It's just a wild shame the BIOS chips are junk. Keep some spares on hand, the BIOS roms and a flasher like a CH341a or something.
The future is a dark place.

isn't there "removable bios" modules? back then it was common thing!

Yeah, I think you're right! My Crosshair V formula-z was socketed if I remember right. Heck, that makes it even easier. :)
