how to get a higher field of view without image distortion?

Is multiple monitors the only way to get a high field of view for gaming? Will a 4k, 2560x1600, 2560x1440 or 2560x1080
monitor let me turn up the fov setting without getting a fisheyed view? I'm sick of looking through a "box". I'm using a 1920x1080 monitor currently.

Actually fisheyed view is what you want, as opposed to "looking through a box":

You could use some kind of distort shader in SweetFX.

Depending on the game, many engines have functionality that allows you to set FOV even though it doesn't appear in video settings.

An example is the updated Hero engine used in Elder Scrolls Online. It has (had? I don't play it anymore - boring POS) custom launchers that allow you to set FOV with a simple .ini change.

However if what you are looking for is an FOV expansion WITHOUT a fisheye effect (because on a 16:9 that's the only way to go really) you could also look at 2160p ultrawide monitors. That way you don't have bezels in your view.

All things in moderation I would say. Going from a standard (60 degree) FOV directly to 90 on 1080p will be quite unsettling, especially if you play fast-paced first person.

Take it in small steps, and it will be a lot easier to get used to. 60> 70, and onwards. The sweet spot is very personal.

I roll 130-145° in FPS games that support it regardless of monitor aspect ratio. The only issue is that the distortion lowers my accuracy a little which is why I roll 130° in insta kill game modes and 145° in game modes with faster firing weapons.

Wuuut 130 ? That's like a fucking kaleidoscope :D

I can't aim for shit above 90

Yes. I use to go for as high of a FOV as possible without resulting in a fish eye effect, however in later years I got frustrated by the stretching of objects at the side of the screen, so I would leave the FOV alone or increase it slightly.

I might just wait for the oculus rift. They sure are taking their sweet time.

Sounds like you're tired of monitors in general, and so am I. If the Rift or any other similar device at a minimum, acts as a normal monitor (but obviously close to your eyes), then it will replace my main monitors for gaming purposes.
The 3d and headtracking to me is just a bonus.

I thought that too at first but now I can't play below 90 without getting a little motion sick and when I can use 130 it really helps with situational awarness. Which in a twitch shooter like cube2:sauerbraten is really useful.

Increase the FOV for as long as distant objects don't move around too much when using freelook. I usually get it up to 90-100°. After that the distortion of the image at distance is too obvious. Almost feels like playing with alien in original AvP then...
