I always thought the "Enable hardware acceleration" setting was to run at least videos on the GPU but it seems I was mistaken.

Running this video, especially set at 8K it's just hammering my CPU...

So is there a way to run youtube videos, or in general all videos in chrome on the GPU only?

You're not mistaken, that's the setting for it. Try monitoring GPU video engine usage in GPU-Z. If your GPU supports the codec the video uses, it should work.

YT used VP9 codec, and gpu's didn't really used to support it. Now it's AV1 and you still need the right gpu's to decode it.

It seems you are right, good upto 4K it seems to run on the GPU, when I set this video in this rare case at 8K it just starts running on the CPU!?

Maybe your GPU can't decode 8K, or maybe the 8K version uses a codec that your GPU doesn't support (AV-1?).

It's a 2070 Super
Then my suspicion is that the 8K stream uses AV-1 which the 2070 doesn't support. Try enabling geek mode in YouTube and check.

I have tried "Always prefer AV1" , it works fine just not for 8K..

Open GPUz, Advanced tab, select DXVA 2.0 Hardware Decode and see the list of supported resolutions/codecs for GPU decode

Yes ok, just upto 4K...

4K, Good enough for me for now though lol, anyway started this thread because the 8K setting was hammering my CPU. :D

This was actually super interesting., I hadn't thought about resolution specific decode at all lol.

They still use it, lot's of content isn't in AV1 because it's not worth the CPU time for every video.

GPU's DID get to support it. nvidia 10 series and higher, Intel 7th gen and higher, AMD.. it's complicated.

I found this thread because I was confused that VP9 isn't HW decoded on my GTX 1070 for some reason. Not in Firefox, and not in Edge. It's supported and I KNOW I've seen it doing that before...

Depending on the video, it's very possible that 8k is served in AV1 and the rest in VP9, seen that a few times. Check the video stats.

- just the first thing that popped up for "8k"
