The issue is that there is no mechanism to remove individual icons from that list.

Only clear the whole list (which is what your VBS script does).

All programs have the same issue

Indeed, I've seen an official Microsoft help page which explained that the icon needs to be swiped over with the mouse pointer to remove it. It seems a simple thing to improve on, but as it is, it's only a minor inconvenience.

OP is not talking about remnant icons in the systray but in the "which icons to show in systray" dialog

Thank you for that, that is an easy method that I was unaware of, of hiding the annoying GWX notification.

Oh ok. This is another one where I was looking at TPU on my smartphone while rushed at work, lol.

Still, my comment about the design of Windows still stands. It should be a trivial thing to remove the icon for an app that's been uninstalled.

I downloaded and run gpu-z.
Then I uninstall (deletd) gpu-z but icon still remains in notification area.
How to remove these icons?

OK I used vbs cript

But I still did not know why icon remains.

What should be a simple thing really is not. Using this workaround is the easiest way I've found to do it if you are running Vista, 7 or 8 OS. It does the hard work for
you. The icon cache will rebuild itself after rebooting a time or two. Can use CCleaner and check "Notification Icons " under advanced but then you still have to stop and restart explorer.exe. This workaround does it all for you.
