just a question i thought tha i be running my computer with ht????am i right in thinking that??my system specs on on my sig!

i read this"

The HT interface 2.0 is specified for optimal signal characteristics when running at 1000 MHz, in other words, the trace layout is optimized for a 1 GHz clock rate. Any frequency below or especially above the nominal value will generate resonance to a certain extent or signal reflexions known as ringing. It is, therefore, highly advisable to keep the HT frequency as close as possible to 1000 MHz. The actual HyperTransport frequency is derived from the external bus input clock and the multiplier. Typical AMD-based motherboards run the external input clock at 200 MHz with a multiplier of 5 x, resulting in a clock rate of 1000 MHz. If the external clock is overclocked, the ratio of the HT bus multiplier needs to be lowered to bring the resulting HT frequency back to 1000 MHz.

on my picture shown here http://forums.techpowerup.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2861&stc=1&d=1150996139

does it mean i need to keep both the arrow in red at 2000mhz and the arrow in blue at 2000mhz????

Interesting: An evidence that o/c'ing NOT be good for Hyper-Transport mobo/cpu's?

See subject line/title, & the point brought up in regan's post!

* Makes you wonder...

APK

P.S.=> An evidence of o/c'ing NOT being good here - or, rather possibly an example of having to "pull" from one area, to "push" another (I've often noted that to pull overclocks, you have to for instance, increase memory latencies timings etc.)?

Sure, speedup the CPU - & gain in CPU-centric tests!

BUT, you sacrifice memory speeds

Overall, I'm sure it works out for the best by some margin, else nobody would go for it - but you have to 'cut down' one area, to give to another to do it apparently... apk

That would be a simple problem with a simpler solution. You need to go into BIOS, and under the chipset options, change the CPU-NB and NB-SB link speed to 1000 Mhz. Though, if that doesn't work, then I just made a fool of myself .

No it doesn't: It means you took a shot @ helping someone out, & also strengthening yourself @ the same time, even IF you are "wrong"...

Heh, everytime we go out here doing that? IMO, it is like playing "Jeopardy" almost... a review session in & of itself (a test).

:)

* PLUS - Hey, remotely "debugging" anything in this field? LOL, man... you KNOW it is much more difficult than being there, where you see it all & have all your tools available, with you running them!

APK

P.S.=> I mean, it's probably odds are correct on my part, that you've been in a thread helping someone, & then it turns up you don't have ALL the info. you needed either (conversely, sometimes using myself as an example, I will try to be TOO "software/OS" oriented, when the problem's in BIOS or hardware, for instance - we shoot for the wrong mark!)... apk

yeh i can change it to 1000mhz in bios but when im running an overlclock its like 1600mhz and which means im running like 3200mhz rather then 2000 on the chipset!!! just wondering if this lowers my system or doesnt make a difference????:twitch:

My best guess then is that "boot failiure gaurd" is doing something to lower the HTT to make sure that your system actually boots lol. "Boot Failiure Gaurd" is under the CPU section in BIOS, I think. Though, remember, there's probably a good reason that your motherboard is clocking itself down :p.

no it just does it when stock! but what im asking is the higher the better or is it dangerous to run it over a 1000mhz ??? i can run its at like 1700 or higher if i could overlcock more!plus do i need to enable hyper-threading technology???????????

folks have run tests with lower htt speeds and there has been no noticable performance losses.. u can drop it down to 600 without a hit..

in reverse this means there is nothing at all to gain by running higher speeds than the stock one..

with the amd 64 bit chips its all down to raw cpu speed.. its all to do with the memory controler being on the cpu.. speed the cpu up and u speed everything up in essence..

trog

ps.. running your htt 1700 is pointless and risky..

Only Intel does "hyperthreading" ;). Hyperthreading is making one core act like two. What HTT stands for on an AMD system is "Hyper Transport", which just does fancy stuff to make the FSB go faster...I think lol.

Benchmarks prove it too ;). Hyperthreaded P4's are about as useless as multi-core P4's right now :p...but they are oh so much better with Vista for some reason. Vista runs better on an aging system with 512MB of memory, unknown GPU, and a P4 with HT then on my system :(.

My board allows very high total HTT speeds and it truely makes no difference. I routinely have my board HT @ 4 and my HTT @ 312 = 1250 total. I gain nothing from this extra speed. The only reason it is nice is that I don't have to change the HT to 3 when overclocking.

WAS running windows Vista is the right word. I couldn't figure out how to dual boot, got angry, and deleted the partition with Vista on it. Lesson learned :). Make sure that you REALLY want to run the Vista beta before installing it. Otherwise, you're gonna be in a heap of trouble when you try to go to XP. Other then that Vista is extremely good. With slightly better driver and program support (and the ability to uninstall Vista without deleting the partition.), I'd say it's ready for final release.

You know, I've always been under the impression that "Intel HyperThreading" was taking the spare CPU cycles left (because cpu's are faster than anything else on the mobo iirc by FAR) & emulating them into a "2nd cpu"...

(However, I was NEVER really "110% sure" if that was how they worked either, admittedly!)

For dual booting you have to Install Vista from Within XP....What I did was mount the Vista Image Into a Virtual DVD drive and Installed It from there...Way faster Install than from Disc........Installing from XP ensures you getting the Multi-Boot menu.

If you plan on leaving UAP(User Account Protection) on...then just make sure to grant your XP Drivers exe file "Administrative Access" to get that done smoothly....I've had no Driver Issues with Vista as of yet...ATI has a Video driver and Nvidia as well for Vista.

Protection soft Is where you may run Into an Issue.......Vista comes with a full package of protection soft.....Installing 3rd party defenses has proven to be alittle more difficult..I had to Kill Off Windows defender to get NOD32 working....PestPatrol Is functional..as Is XoftSpySE.
Heres a good Vista Site to look at.....covers quite abit of stuff really.

regan1985:
Your 1600Mhz Is fine....you said only at stock........looks like your running your HT divider at 4x(800Mhz) Instead of the Default 5x(1000Mhz) In your bios when at stock....at stock speeds(HTT 200x11 cpu multi) your 200 Is being multi'd by the HT 4x(800Mhz) divider Instead of the Default 5x(1000Mhz) divider....giving you an HTT speed of 800Mhz x2 and viola...1600Mhz.

But as already mentioned....Unless your running Dual Cards of high power and a few other things.....your not going to see much diff In performance.

the computor industry kinda gest muddled up between speed and capacity.. it quotes extra capacty as extra speed.. pci-e is twice as fast as agp for example..

a two lane highway dont get faster cos u turn it into a four lane one.. the pc industry would claim it to be twice as fast thow.. he he

its all bullsh-t but it certainly sells new computers..

a few years down the line when that two lane highway fills up with traffic it might be "faster".. but it never ever is when they first claim it to be so..

trog
