I've had a HD 3450, HD 4550 and HD 4830 in mine and they're all about equal for HD, of course the higher ends decode faster but playback is still about the same.

All ATi HD 2000 series and above can transmit sound via HDMI.. Albeit it's not 100% great, it gets the job done!

all ATI cards from the 2xx0 series and up support HDMI audio.

You need to give us more info.

1. what kind of sound are you intending to play (games, music, DVD movies, bluray movies)
2. what speaker system do you have

If he is gaming, I have a HD 4830 in mine. Absolute beast of a card, especially for a htpc :rockout:

Agreed the 4830 is probably the best bet. IF you need more performance for gaming there are several 4850s that offer HDMI support and give you more horsepower for gaming applications.

If you are using it for HTPC, I would go with at least a 4670

That is what I'm using for my HTPC with HDMI out. Plays 1080p without any problems. Also, the few games I do play... Burnout Paradise, COD, and a few others all look great on max setting without any lag. You can pick one up for around $70.00

here is the card i'm using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161252

The card forces the air out of the back of my case which is great because with it being a HTPC, i've got a small case and my temps are very low.

Any video can output 1080P for HTPC use in media. Its only games where you need more powerful cards.

I HIGHLY recommend a 4350 as it should be the cheapest card to meet your settings. The 4xxx series has 7.1 audio which should be more than sufficient. In order to get anything higher than stereo working though, you are required to have an audio receiver
