I got a cpu fan error message on startup, and the rpm on HWMonitor is crazy.

Well basically i started up my pc today and got a screen with the American Trends Logo and on the bottom saying CPU fan error. When i opened HWMonitor today the rpm reading were going crazy first displaying the real rpm and then a much larger rpm that my fan cant even reach. I'm guessing the rpm sensor is defective. The fan is spinning in the case and the temps are fine, so i wanted to ask if i can still use the fan. https://gyazo.com/a568ad116dabd33d387d69daaa2190f0

Seems like an odd question if you suspect it is the sensor and not the fan.
As long as your temps remain down, sure, you can keep using that fan. But I would want to isolate and correct the problem anyway.

Possible causes could be:
Loose fan connector,
Failing fan,
Bad sensor,
Bad BIOS setting,
Gremlins.

Have you rebooted to see if the problem remains?
 
replace the fan ? like these get buggy there like smart and you see the pcb circuits in the fan body running things to fail or get buggy . these issue fans got replaced with new and all was then fine

also sticking / dry bearing throwing things off ? give a drop of light oil

fans are cheap and one of the first things I'd check / test. .

I get some like yours is doing and just been replace the fan with a good one
 
Unplug the fan, and plug it back. Check if the fan is physically spinning, if it does, just ignore the warning.
 
You cannot ignore the warning. If you do, the wolf may really come and eat your sheep.
 
Hard to tell with given information. The most common cause for CPU Fan error is when you replace the stock fan with a bigger 3rd party one. The MoBo expects a certain number and if it doesn't see it, then you get an erro.... solution, go in BIOS and set min. fan speed to 590 cfm (assuming fan is 600 - 1400 or so)

Also don't know what cooler, what fan or what MoBo. Are you using BIOS settings or MoBo utility to control fans.... have you unplugged, cleand the connectors, cleaned the fan and isnpected for irregularities, ? Does it spin freely and steadily ? Do you have a spare fan that you can connect to instead for testing ?
 
I guess where keeping a junk box of new used / pull off parts from old builds and hardware is nice . like me I'd have a few case , cooler , gpu, ect.. fans to slap on to test and see for example.

What's the spec of your system?
It could be anything from a faulty fan, RPM sensor issues, malfunctioning SuperI/O to serious chipset/SoC problems.
I've seen it recently on a relatively fresh low-end Lenovo desktop(some SFF with Celeron N3150 onboard): checked the fan circuitry, soldered a brand-new ITE multicontroller and the issue persisted. Come to find out this is a frequent issue on those and similar models and is caused by SoC partially failing and reading wrong data from SMBus.

As many people have already said - I'd start with a new fan. If it won't help - take it to a local repair shop to confirm motherboard issues.

My specs are:
Mobo: H110M-R;
CPU fan: Arctic 11 plus.
Also i tried to unplug the fan and plug it back it, but that didn't work out either, and the error message doesn't appear anymore when i boot the pc up but the rpm is still going crazy, the fan is working perfectly fine. I tested the temps while playing games with RivaTuner and they are perfectly fine. Now i have a spare intel stock cooler that i can put inside, but the problem is that the god damn arctic fan is so hard to pull out, so i thought if i could put the arctic fan on the chasis fan pins with the fan still on the cpu, and the intel one on the cpu pins. So if the rpm goes crazy on both of them then its the mobo's fault and if it goes crazy on the chasis fan reading it's the fan?
 
Try to disable Fan Xpert from the UEFI.

Is it colder in your area?

Automatic fan control always trigger false positive fan errors.

Some motherboards let you control the threshold before a warning appears.
 
Fan is bad if the reading shows in more than a single program.

Hw monitor used to give me a whacky mobo temp reading that i know was wrong. Check the speed in bios
 
Forgot one thing... try HWiNFO

Unplugging I don't expect will change anything unless you clean both connectors.

-If using BIOS for fan control, change the mode and the min. rpm
-If using FanXpert for fan control, play with the controls... chnage to rpm mode and go full tilt ... see if rpm matches in HWiNFO. Then adjust speed with FanXpert and check HWiNFO to see if it follows.

FanXpert btw, highly recommended ... and yes you can use it w/o using rest of AISuite
