I was looking to get a few 2011 based machines running for crunching with some spares I had laying around, Bought an ebay mainboard with a view to buy several more if the board were of an acceptable quality, These little matx X79 boards seemed a cheap viable solution (turns out the boards have a h61 (cougar point) chipset

, What could possibly go wrong? Right?

Uefi capable American megatrend. Listed as 1333,1600,1866 compatible but only runs jdec 1333 no xmp, very much a server platform bios.. Alc662 on board realtek lan.

H61 chipset, like my H67, only supports up to 1333. It won't run any higher speed. That has less to do with servers and more with Intel's market segmentation. They wanted you on Z68 to get >1333MHz RAM.

Yes, I had one crunching with a XEON 24/7 with no issues for months before getting my hands on a better board.

Basic BIOS, no overclocking, but they work.

Where does all these Chinese X58 and X79 motherboard come from? No any branding, quality can be anything, some are crippled with too few memory slots for taking advantage of triple/quad channel..

I mean, are the used quality motherboards truly that rare or expensive these days?

No idea, the H61 chipset really surprised me. That is not a chipset you would usually find on a 2011 board. I wouldn't pay that price for a fake, though... I'd really need a 2011 board, and the prices of the real boards would have to be pretty high...

x58 users can attest to this. Try finding an x58 board for a reasonable price... sure, you can get a $10 Xeon, but the attractiveness of the platform is really offset by the board prices.

It seems clear what she meant, and you are smart enough to have reached this conclusion, is who is making them all? Noname brands with little or no real warranty? Seems shady..

Good point if you're wanting to OC. However, grabbing a decent OEM setup and putting in a nice X56xx chip can be very cost effective.

Given China's state run economy on many products, I have a feeling you will never get that answer.
