Try downloading through validating first then download then install.

Validate --> Download --> Install

rather then

Download --> Validating + installing

Phone M$ and tell then that their Genuine Advantage is crap. Also try this Diagnostics tool from M$ - it has managed to fix my PC when it wasn't detecting properly.

1. uninstall current WMP version
2. extract the files with winrar in the .exe file into a folder of the same name (wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu)
3. run both self extracting cabinet files, go to your media player folder and make a shortcut to WMP on the desktop.
4. restart, done

Meh, I prefer Winamp to WMP anyway. It supports 5.1 surround now, sounds good, and has better visualizations.
