Overkill is in the eyes of the beholder, for me my system is not completely overkill but others tell me I am crazy where as I see some people and sometimes think their system is a bit overkill for their intentions.

Right now based on what everyone has said/has been said the best idea is for you to go ahead and get your self a new monitor 1080p 60hz or higher and then work from there. Most cards at a standard 1080p 60 setup will power high/ultra setting no sweat for a cheap price right now. A GTX 970 is considered by me and others a bit "overkill" if you will for 1080p 60 however you will not have to worry at all about changing any setting down when gaming. You can also get cards like a R9 280, R9 280X, R9 290, R9 290X, GTX 770, GTX 780, GTX 780ti, and GTX 980 to power it and be set for quite awhile as well at 1080p. Some of the cards would be considered overkill for 1080p (IE GTX 980, GTX 780ti, 290, and 290X) however they would all do it no sweat and probably last you quite awhile. Running at 900p is going to make a lot of things seem overkill so it is a great idea to get a nice inexpensive monitor (1080p 60 monitors with a decent response time is quite easily attainable for about $150) and then go from there. there are other resolutions too, i actually use it on desktop too with my TV ( 1920x1200 ) and find upping the Win 7's DPI and selecting a higher res can make the desktop so much sharper and clearer.

Well just the DPI will do that but shit gets to big and to be able to select a higher resoluter than the monitor \ tv can handle gets around it. And in game you don't even need AA by using it and gets around the issue were some games don't or support AA correctly.

How ever like some are concerned about is the cpu which could prove a issue with cpu bound games and as we don't know what games or kind of games he plays would help too.

If he really needs to i would get a 970 should serve him well and if he gets a higher resolution monitor or a TV he should be still good, maybe a upgrade other parts like cpu at a later time.

It is exactly that condition that must be targeted. With VSync and/or frame limiter enabled.

Because if my GPU is too powerful for that settings, it will not need to keep at 100% load and killing itself all the time.
It is preferable if it keeps at 50-70% load or less, it will consume less power and heat less, much less.
Considering your CPU is not the bottleneck, it will heat less too.

That's one of the advantages of being "overkill".

Just my opinion based on facts.

Yeah a 670 is almost as powerful as my 7970, but ironically you wouldn't know it by looking at it's performance in some of the latest Nvidia endorsed games.

I had a MSi GTX680 P.E. and the only time it couldn't handle any game was in Nvidia Surround and lack of it only having 2gb. I just bought a new MSi GTX970 GAMING and I really didn't expect it to be noticeable.. and all I have to say is WOW! Everything is so buttery smooth with ultra textures in FC4 in Nvidia Surround. I wouldn't think anymore about it, and get a GTX970, and be done with it. You won't be disappointed. Also, I only have my i72600k overclocked to 4.0ghz at the moment and should be comparable to your chip at 4ghz. My H50 isn't cutting it any longer I need a new H100i to get it back up to 4.5ghz.. hehe

I try to be nice and polite as much as I can, as I have no reason to be an ass. But when someone spews bs multiple times, then I get just a wee bit pissed off. Accuracy is key here, and saying a 7950 can outperform a 770 is just so wrong when there are multiple benchmarks saying otherwise. We have facts; only the ignorant choose to ignore them.

I ran Vantage on the 7850 I got for somebody..It scored slightly better than 5870...
6870 is a weak card.Nowhere near the power.

6870 is a weak card.Nowhere near the power.
