I should apply thermal paste here?

Well, IMHO, if you can't properly apply thermal paste onto a chip without screwing it up, then you have no business attemting to mod/fix components in a computer...... seriously, it aint that friggin hard people. It just takes a little patience and a steady hand :)

I have used the "small dot in the center" method for over 15 years on both CPU's and GPU's, nevanottaproblemo !

I use the pea size method dead center. Works for me for both CPUs and GPUs

Yet one of the highest rated, most expensive(Grizzly Kryonaught) comes with a spatula for spreading? Now granted that stuff is not great to work with especially on GPU dies.

Because it's made for LN2 oc'ing, spreading the paste makes it crack less (well, most of the time anyway :p). For ambient it really doesn't matter how you apply any paste, it all works the same.

i just cut the head off a q-Tip and mush it around, honestly, if you masked the rest of the component off, you could apply TIM with a shotgun. arguing the "right" way, is like arguing the right way to tie your shoes.

I've seen videos of reputable builders make mistakes, so it happens.

Possibly the worst argument for the second amendment I have ever heard.
