I turn off in-game music...do you?

Do you turn off in-game music?

  • Yes, I do. It distracts me from other sound FX and dialogue. And it's more realistic that way.

Absolutely game dependent. Repetitive crap gets muted, mood/ambiance stuff gets left alone.

I chose the "No, I don't. It's part of the developers' vision about the game's atmosphere."

I can't remember ever turning the music off in a game. It's part of the game imo.

There are some games where the music is very important to the atmosphere. Take for example Doom 3. Would it even still be the Doom 3 experience without the music cranked up?

Depends on the game.

If you spent 10 years on the same game. the same tunes get dry after a while. Sometimes it just makes more sense to have your own music for raids and stuff to get yourself into a rhythm

I finished Rebel Galaxy Outlaw recently and even if I missed some techno music I liked the atmosphere the in-game radio stations add and the commercials were fun.
Imagine playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance or Skyrim listening Drum&Bass ? The hell !?

I committed this terrible sin. Forgive me!

I've replaced the soundtrack with a bunch of music overhauls. I only listen to TES OST when doing work. Sometimes turning off in-game music is better because the game engine can overlap by playing 2-3 tracks at once. 1) it's just immersion breaking as hell. 2) There's no fix for it. 3) Less taxing on the fickle nature of the game = less chance to randomly crash/freeze the application.

Voted with depends on the game.

I recurrently play my own thematic playlists on things such as BattleTech, GTA series, ARPG's, Dark Souls, Fallout 4 and for other games that have repetitive tasks ad-nauseum like Runescape, I just play anything. More games are going on the chopping block if I keep replaying them consistently as I get bored of hearing the same thing frequently.

Don't know why but playing Deftones/Chevelle can sync up on Skyrim sometimes, or it's just the mood I'm in, went for a random walk with my followers around the province murdering every dumb NPC trying to fight my mega ultra instinct level 89 battlemage with Apocalypse spells, it was the take out the trash day... I like to experiment from time-to-time.

Did you know you can import a playlist file and toss it to the user folder for GTA San Andreas/GTA V and the user radio will play those songs without need of copying the files manually? It's probably my favorite music related feature in any game. The only plus to that would be the ability to add working Soundcloud playlists, it's possible to mod it in, as it is possible to make and play them through media player plugins, but I doubt anyone needs such a feature.

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
Yes and No.

I actually dont 99% of the time.

The 1% of the time that I do I actually only do for specific reasons. Like if a RAID in an MMO or boss fight in an RPG is super difficult I turn off the ingame music for that specific instance because the music is almost always designed to stress you out and I perform much better in these scenarios with it disabled and only sound effects on so I can still get the audible queues.

Yes i do, pretty much every game, their wa only 1 tune i liked in skyrim and that got old after many hours haha, how ever i have left it on in RDR2 as it's not as annoying in that although it gives you a clue some thing has changed.

Mostly depends on the game. Doom (2016) I couldn't possibly play without the in-game soundtrack. Racing games - I usually play something else from other sources, however just finished the career in need for speed underground (2003) while listening to the in-game soundtrack - instant return back to those days.

If you replaced some TES soundtracks for some other TES soundtracks I guess even the developers can forgive you my friend :D
And I admit I used the custom radio in GTA Online too but when a friend is in a vehicule with me I stick to normal radio stations. Recently they added a fresh new radio and it's not that bad :)

Depends on the game. Most racing games, it's a guaranteed off, as I row my own and use engine noise as my shift queue. I'll leave music on when it's done right in others. Could you imagine playing Halo:CE without the iconic music? Maybe it's a Bungie thing, cause I leave the audio on in Destiny 2 as well. When it's done right, you don't even notice the music, as it adds to the mood.
