Looking To Overclock And Crossfire.

Hey,

I am after a new motherboard, I currently have a Gigabyte G33-DS3R and a E8400.
I am kind of a newbie to overclocking but no matter what I do, I can't get it to boot over 3.6 (and that isn't stable ether) Plus I want to go crossfire with 2 4870's.

So I am basically asking for a good overclocking board (aiming for 4ghz) with crossfire.
I have been looking at the Asus p5Q-E and the only thing that concerns me with it, is that in crossfire, I believe it changes to 2, 2.0 x8 slots. I know that this is a good o/c board, but it is just the crossfire that is bothering me.

I have tried to look for the difference in x8 and x16 slots, and from what I can see it is the bandwidth of the graphics card you are going to use and what resolution you are going to run it at, to see if you are going to get any bottlenecks. Is this true?

I am looking to spend no more than £140.

Any advice or alternatives is greatly appreciated :)

Hey Guys thanks for your suggestions, I do like the look of that Gigabyte board but I think I am in need of a change from there "wacky" colours. As for the Asus Pro Board, it keeps popping up as a good board from everyone who I have asked, it is just that x8 lanes I am bothered about when I crossfire. So that is what is making me like the x48 Asus P5E Deluxe more as it has "true x16 lanes" But is it worth the extra £40 for performance I will or will not see?

That is one of the main reasons why I went with the X48 ;)

Crossfiring 4870's will be fine on a P45 as they are PCI-E 2.0 x8 slots, which have the same bandwidth as PCI-E 1.1 x16.

Only time you need PCI-E 2.0 x16 is on dual GPU cards, and even then the difference is minimal.

A P45 will OC much better and easier, and will be cooler.

P5Q PRO is the best Asus P45 board, I only bought the Deluxe because I could, lol. And dont really use any of the extras it comes with.

Well that settles it then :)
I will go for the pro :toast:

Sounds like a good choice to meet your needs :)

I have the Pro and I can get 500 FSB on a quad! That is quite good seeing as I am not using extreme cooling. The only problem I had was I had to paint a fan at the North Bridge because it was getting really hot. The P5Q pro is a very solid board, and I highly recommend it.
