I would give anything for Valve's Steam to have an option to disable the Big Picture Mode button. How many times have I accidently clicked it, fml

All I picked up from this topic is how awesome Steam really is. I mean if THIS is the biggest gripe Gabe did a damn fine job.

Meanwhile we just learned a week ago that Sweeney agrees the EGS needs improving - yes, its May 2025 and he finally figured it out... Lol.

your going to be pissed like two months from now, somehow this topic stuck in your subconscious and you accidently start clicking it

@Steve-007UK no that doesn't help this issue. I am not expecting anyone to give me an answer to this issue, I am just venting my frustration when I misclick :D
I never minimize steam window, I just close it.

especially after the forums became a heavily moderated echo chamber.
I mean that's the last thing I'd call steam forums...

Nah, used to be near lawless, the only thing that got you banned was endorsing piracy. Like, a grassroots thing you know?

I loved it because it was a front row seat to some of the most unruly posts on the internet, angry gamers can be (and tbh are) quite a crowd

It will be missed.

Biggest bugbear for me with steam is after all this time there's still no option to close instead of going to tray, instead you have to go to steam>exit, small annoyance though it really pisses me off even today

yeah battle net gives you the option, and I think heroic games launcher does as well. steam is a bit outdated in some regards

I find that heroic games launcher is more intuitive overall too, and just looks nicer.

I dunno I witnessed quite the fetid spectacle just the other day but who cares, we're offtopic anyways.

oh I also forgot to explain this, it happens more frequently with me because I often stay in Small Mode: I love small mode cause its so clean and simple, but accidently hit big picture mode all the time. Happened against just now. FUCK YOU VALVE MOVE IT FURTHER BELOW LIKE WHERE IT SAYS UPDATE NEWS FUCK ITS SO ANNOYING lags out my PC then its hard to exit too, fml

Man, I wish Steam could just, you know, be a game store. That's all I want. I don't need Big Picture, their overlay, recorders, input translation hack jobs or anything. I wish they would just release a Steam Mini client, consisting of: store window, basic chat functionality (like the old, pre-browser one) and the ability to launch games. That's IT. Nothing else. I'd be using that instead.

That's not a very reasonable demand. The options to switch modes are functionally similar, so it makes sense they be grouped together. Separating them like you are proposing is bad ui design. Principle of proximity 'n all that.

I just wanted to minimum the screen.

I accidently hit the button the left, which puts me into Big Picture Mode, which takes 5 seconds to launch, then it makes it really hard and buried under sub menu to exit picture mode.

I do not want big picture mode on my desktop at all.

I have hit it like 100x over the years, and I can't stand it anymore.

I am hereby today declaring the goal of mankind, of all mankind, is to eliminate this button or movie it further away where I won't accidently click on it. Who is with me?

:banghead::banghead::banghead:
I am pretty sure is an option to disable big picture mode, so your wish is already granted. Just checked i am wrong, although it is optional when using a controller.

well just design it so there is a empty space between the two modes then. I don't really care, just saying its annoying. No doubt in my mind it could be designed better, so eh

Dunno, man. I checked a few apps I have open. The clickable zone for Steam's main menus' entries is about the same as GTK/Adawaita defaults on Ubuntu 25.04, and slightly bigger than Firefox, Thunderbird, and some Qt-based application. None of them have a space between entries (and I honestly don't recall a gui that does).

I do think Steam's root menu bar is slightly small. But the menus themselves aren't.

I suppose you could have a scaling issue? A mouse issue?
Either these, or skill issue (sorry, couldn't resist). :D

I guess it is true, I have never really used my mouse properly, I always use a very high DPI 3600 I think at all times, but since my screen is 2880x1800, that means my hand is moving very little. I guess I need to get used to moving my mouse around more and lower my DPI

enhance pointer precision, on or off? I can't decide. maybe that would help turning it back on... I don't know

You dont need high dpi... put sensitivity in windows settings to 5 or 6 and work with 1000 dpi to start. Im not tossing my mouse around the mat that way... I tend to end up around 800 dpi with claw/fingertip grip, 1000 ish with palm grip on bigger mice. Can reach opposite corners of my 3440x1440 panel with a bit more than a flick of the wrist.

Put pointer speed just past the center of that bar. Its the only good setting (1:1).

I don't think I have ever minimized Steam, I close it.

My brain just doesn't want to memorize anything new.

This is interesting, because this means you have learned that the leftmost thing in that little menu is minimize and you have used it a lot. I have learned that the X is close (or minimize to tray) and the other options is something I sort of have to look at before using because I'm not used to using them. Is upper right (X as in close) as hardcoded? I almost never minimize things.
Windows 11 for my work laptop.

nope that didn't work, it just resized it

Win+Double down btw.

I think I solved how to get around it, basically I just put steam guard on my phone and can browse the steam store that way now exclusively. Only time I ever have issues is when I am switching from Small mode to regular mode so I can check the store, now I have mitigated this issue... so yeah I will just stay in small mode 24/7 now

I'd get a tablet or laptop for that, because why not..

Funny you mention that, I almost got the 11 inch 2025 ipad that was on sale for $279 for prime day... but I backed out at the last second.
