i7-8750H - displaying only 4 cores while gaming

Hi everybody!

I have been enjoying ThrottleStop since I bought my Omen laptop a few years ago. However, lately, I came to notice that while gaming (see the first attached image), TS displays only 4 cores working whereas while on desktop it normally displays all the cores/threads (see the 2nd attached image). This has not been the issue before. Was there a change? Is it a normal thing?

Thank you in advance!
Best

Are you running some gaming improvement software on your computer? This software prevents ThrottleStop from accessing all 6 cores and 12 threads of your 8750H.

Does this magic software you are running actually improve gaming performance? Probably not. Intel CPUs do a really good job managing themselves without any software interfering with what software will be allowed to run on what core.

TS displays only 4 cores
ThrottleStop is being limited to 2 cores / 4 threads.

Thank you for the super swift reply dear unclewebb!

No. I don't use any other programs except Omen's built-in software, which has some kind of (so-called) booster (see the image below) that automatically starts running when opening a game. But I had this software since day 1 and didn't have such an issue before. It got a recent update, could this be the problem? I think, I will need to check!

Thank you and best.

Evil game boosting software. I hope it is doing something productive.

Processor Core Affinity Optimization is the evil option. Affinity is what limits certain software to certain cores.

I cannot guarantee that ThrottleStop will work correctly if it does not have access to each and all of your cores.

Yes, you were right! I disabled that software and TS started to work as usual, displaying all the cores again. I will stop using this "evil" software I think :)

Thank you for your help and wish you the best!

Not all game boosting software is evil. I am just skeptical about everything. Now you can check your FPS with this option enabled or disabled to see if it makes any difference. If it assigns too many tasks to the first two cores, this might interfere with maximum or smooth performance.
