I bought all the required items for a 2nd rig I was going to build for a friend a while back, unfortunately either the board or the chip is fried. I'm guessing the board.

Anyway, he didn't end up needing the computer and now I've got the parts assuming it's not the chip that's fried.

So regarding this board, it says 1366/xeon. Anyone know if it'd take a pair of i7 920's and if so would the ram have to match for both chips?
The price on evga's site is pretty good.

Also wondering if the megahalems fit on that board.

It can only run Xeons with the dual QPI. Standard desktop chips like the i7 9xx series are not compatible.

You need to look up the appropriate chips. It's not a budget board :)

*Oh and the megahalems do fit on the board. I've seen an SR-2 with dual megahalems installed.

Yeah, I thought I remembered the xeons being back compatible to the 1366 boards, apparently not the other way around. :( I best cut my losses

Nehalem and Westmere Xeons only for the SR-2. Megahalems will be OK as Fits had them on his MegaRig prior to watercooling them.

What about the Xeon W3520? It's equivalent to the i7 920 but it has 2 QPI links. Would that work?

It won't work based on this:

"Based on Intel 5520/ICH10R chipset
Supports Dual QPI Socket 1366 Intel Xeon 5600 and 5500 Processors"
