id Software Talks AMD Ryzen, Hints at Heavily Optimized New Game Engine

id Software, the pioneering game studio behind "Doom" and "Quake," in a marketing video about how its developers and gamers are benefiting from AMD Ryzen processors, hinted that it is working on a new next-generation game engine that succeeds idTech 6, which is heavily optimized for AMD Ryzen processors. id CTO Robert Duffy spoke at length about how Ryzen is putting more CPU capabilities in the hands of gamers at attractive price-points, which is letting game developers add that much more content and production design that benefits from this level of parallelism and performance.

The most interesting part about Duffy's comment comes later in the video, where he talks about a new game engine that id is working on, which will be "far more parallel than idTech 6" (far more multi-core and multi-thread friendly), and that it will be able to consume "all of the CPU [compute power] that Ryzen can offer." Duffy also confirmed that "Quake Champions," the studio's upcoming online hero-based FPS, will be optimized for both Ryzen and Radeon Vega.

Multi-thread friendly is awesome regardless of it benefiting Ryzen or not. This is great news, then again, the engine on which Doom was built was well optimized to begin with. Go id Software!
 
Yeah, the engine in Doom is hyper optimized. I mean, running brand new amazing looking game on Ultra settings at 100+ FPS on mid end card like GTX 980 is just spectacular.

I hope more developers will follow, though this is a good start for AMD. Bethesda is a high profile developer now. If anything, we can be assured all Quake, Doom, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games will now be heavy multithreaded. Which is a nice start.

Quake and Doom, yes. TES and fallout have been running on Gamebryo and later the Creation engine, witch have not been the most optimized engines.
 
PLZ let it become the Quake 3 engine of the modern era, so at least 70% of the games run on it. Provide simple tools for creating games in it.

I don't think that will happen. id Tech is now the same as Frostbite with EA. It's their internal engine now. I find it very unlikely they'll sell it to 3rd parties. Unreal Engine and Unigine seem to hold that place now.

I know, and it sucks. Mainly because I want a Jedi Knight made by Raven in an id engine, but nooooo for some reason they are busy doing useless CoD stuff.
 
A proper Soldier of Fortune reboot wouldn't hurt either :D Imagine all the possibilities of GHOUL system with modern graphics engines :D

The sad thing is that id Tech engines aren't all that popular anymore.

That's because they keep it to themselves. Just like EA keeps Frostbyte3 etc...
 
id Tech can be licensed but doing so costs 6-7 digits worth of money up front. It represents a huge barrier to entry and when there's a small user base, it doesn't get much in the way of extension support. They need to change licensing of the engine to be more favorable to indie developers (pay on the backside instead of the front side).

Here's hoping TES6 and FO5 move to idTech.
 
FO5 can move to an engine made by a hamster running on a wheel. It'll probably be better than this crap now.

I wouldn't complain at all. Seeing amazing performance in Doom even on lowest end cards, having such engine available in more games would certainly increase the sales of games in general. Then again, there is a reason why Bethesda would want to keep such engine for themselves...

I played Wolfenstein the new Order and Old Blood in an HD5450 at 1366x768 :laugh:and it did run OK at low settings (but not lowest).

I read some posts in past that explained how that wouldn't work, because games like TES or Fallout are completely different beast than a shooter. It's not just about performance (which Bethesda Gamefrankenbryo isn't very friendly with obviously).

In comparison, I played Overwatch on i3-380m and 5450M, on 720p, everything on lowest and render scale 50%. Ran like shit and looked like one as well. But then again, Blizzard engines are pretty crap. D3 engine implementation being the worst.

Yes, I'm well aware what the engine consequences are when it comes to making a fully fleshed out open world like TES or Fallout vs a shooter, however Dishonored has and Prey is going to have quite large levels to explore. Also, it should be said, that the old id Tech 5 engine was used in an open world game (Rage) that, while it had some bad performance when it first launched, was eventually patched to work correctly with things like megatextures which are now becoming a normal trick to use in the gaming world.

So an id Tech engine can definitely be adapted to a large open world game. Or, at the very least, get them to develop a brand new engine specifically for Bethesda that they can use for another decade or more. The sales of their TES and Fallout games certainly warrant it.

Yep forgotten to say that the graphic were still pretty good on low IMO and anyway it did worked well for my standards on that HD5450 :).

Very good engine, kudos for id :toast:, alongside Source, and maybe Unreal
 
Are there any mods for the recent Doom game?

If so, with Fallout and Elder Scrolls having such a huge modding scene, I am not sure us PC gamers are going to enjoy them that much moving over to a more locked down engine.
 
Bethesda proactively supports modding in TES/FO. Modding was actually the incentive to re-release Skyrim as the Skyrim Special Edition. They would no doubt do the same if they changed engines.

Yes, it is. I finally got around to playing it last week. The game runs like a dream.
