Valve also today shared new sales statistics for Counter-Strike. The publisher said that the Counter-Strike franchise--which debuted 12 years ago this month--has sold over 25 million units.

if a billion people played counter-strike then counter-strike: global offensive wouldn't be a shitty $10 downloadable title with a low budget.

yeah the innovators. quake, unreal and counter-strike where are they today? on the shelf.

They are old what do you expect? COD MW1 is slowly becoming in the same boat. This was not to start a pissing war about sales it was to point out that other good online shooters came before COD and paved the way for COD.

I always thought COD was based off of the James Bond FPS engine...
Anyways they have steadily made the gameplay mechanics better...something games made from DICE needs...just saying...

Anyways Elite doesn't mean shit for PC gamers and it's not as boring as many of you make it sound.

The engine was the IDtech3 engine.

Um no. Its the Quake Engine. Tech 3.

Shit I got them backwards after I posted that. Its IDtech3. SORRY Couldnt edit fast enough.

Thats what I get for doing too many things at one time HAHA. I feel stupid now after trying to put my point accross about CS and quaking being the paving grounds for COD since COD was build off Quake engine like CS

No. They are on MY shelf and in my heart. Something the new CoD will never be. Sales do not make a classic.

Source distantly originates from the GoldSrc engine, itself a heavily modified version of John D. Carmack's Quake engine, as is explained by Valve employee Erik Johnson on the Valve Developer Community:[32]
“ When we were getting very close to releasing Half-Life (less than a week or so), we found there were already some projects that we needed to start working on, but we couldn't risk checking in code to the shipping version of the game. At that point we forked off the code in VSS to be both $/Goldsrc and /$Src. Over the next few years, we used these terms internally as "Goldsource" and "Source". At least initially, the Goldsrc branch of code referred to the codebase that was currently released, and Src referred to the next set of more risky technology that we were working on. When it came down to show Half-Life 2 for the first time at E3, it was part of our internal communication to refer to the "Source" engine vs. the "Goldsource" engine, and the name stuck. ”

Source was developed part-by-part from this fork onwards, slowly replacing GoldSrc in Valve's internal projects[33] and explaining in part the reasons behind its unusually modular nature. Valve's development of Source since has been a mixture of licensed middleware (Havok Physics, albeit heavily modified, and MP3 playback) and in-house-developed code.
John Carmack commented on his blog in 2004 that "there are still bits of early Quake code in Half-Life 2".[34]

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
True, but i foresee news, Black Ops 2 sell a jillion copies

I dont even see how people liked that game. I have MW3 because it was bought for me. I play them and any game for the story. Which apparently makes me rare. I honestly dont have the patience to play with any of you on servers. A few SELECT TPU members I will play with but for the most part stay away from online in any game. People take the fun out of the game. WTF is the point of playing for your level? Its cool to unlock the better scope but arguing with me over the headset about how much better you are because your level 47 and took 800 hours of playing to get makes you look like an idiot. Black OPS was ridiculous anyway. I played about 2 hours of my friends copy and decided it was retarded. MW in that aspect is FAR better imo. I HATE WW2 games. I enjoyed the original call of dutys but the market is saturated with them. Im so tired of playing with an M1 grand it makes my eyes bleed. I guess I just dont understand how other people cant/dont see this. Im surprised black ops sold as much as it did.

My only CoD experience was MW2 on one of the free weekends and I couldn't understand what was so appealing about the game. Deathmatch is only fun when the learning curve is high and there are game mechanics that are conducive to deep strategy, like weapon / powerup pickups in UT and Quake. CoD has a very low starting learning curve and is filled to the brim with cheap gimmicks...great for people that play a game for less than 50 hours or so, not so much for the crowd that likes to play a game for years and master it. It's a cookie cutter money machine that has arguably ruined the entire FPS genre with the sales model and player expectations for "fun".

I think of CoD as training wheels. Good to start off before you start playing REAL fps games.

This is true solely for the reason that TF2 requires more skill to play than CoD. At the end of the day CoD = Justin Bieber.

CoD is probably the best FPS game you can experience on a console and that is where the argument should stay. It's meaningless to compare it to different FPS games on the PC as everyone has different tastes. Never rely on ratings or articles like this one, it should really just give you an idea of what to generally expect from the game, people shouldn't let others shove their opinions down their throat voluntarily, your opinion matters most share it but don't let others change it.

I miss being able to experience a certain genre of a game for the first time. :(

Yeah, good luck running up to someone in BF3, 5 metres away, and still managing to knife them.

I would definitely consider Halo to be the better console FPS
