Intel 12th Generation Alder Lake Platform Reportedly Brings 20% Single-Threaded Performance Uplift

The entry-level 600-series motherboards will only support DDR4 memory at up to 3200 MHz while high-end Z690 motherboards will include DDR5 support

the hell? oh god they're gunna seperate the market even worse than it is now, with the way memory is locked down on non Z boards

PCIe 5.0 seems premature, especially as it's only for the x16 slot.
Up to eight lanes for the chipset is also interesting.
Both PCIe 4.0 & 3.0 for the chipset...
What a mess.
Only the top of the range of the Z690 boards are likely to get DDR5 support from what I've heard. Most will use DDR4.
The original post says "The chipset itself will also support Gen4 and Gen3." Maybe the backwards compatibility will end on Gen3?

That was dumb, the only reason AMD probably settled that lawsuit is because it'd take more of their resources (i.e. $) to litigate it in the US courts! Those were 8 cores, just not regular 8 (Zen) cores we have today :shadedshu:

Well can you call an engine an L8 when it has only 4 piston heads and lose to competitor's L4 engine ;).

I was looking at the chipset diagram, it's odd that Intel has listed both separately, hence my comment.

Gracemont probably only supports PCIe 3.0, though I have no idea how they'll make this work with big.LITTLE & different PCIe lanes!

As I pointed out, it'll be worse than that, as the board makers aren't planning on adding DDR5 to most of their Z690 boards.

The only reason why PCIe 5.0 & especially now v6 exists is because of one-upmanship by Intel. That's the (only) major point they can tout against the Zen juggernaut & frankly even enterprises won't care!
Why will that be a one up? Zdn4 will have both PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 and leaks have already put the core to core performance uplift of Zen4 vs Zen3 at 29%, so I'm not sure alder lake will be able to best AMD

Sapphire Rapids will probably have PCIe 6.0, that or its successor ~ Intel will likely be the first to PCIe 6.0 & that's why they pushed it so hard.

Why 90 plus % of consumers choose to believe before they know what is inside that they buy? Low educated?
Basically yes, all the consumer sheep have been brain washed by years of marketing that Intel inside is good, they don't look for specs.

You mean like the time AMD get a class action lawsuit for calling Bulldozer 8 cores CPU  ?
Yes, that's exactly the SAME case. I was thinking about it when writing that post, but I chose to keep it simple.

AMD had two disadvantages back then. Lack of HyperThreading and manufacturing. AMD was at 32nm with Intel moving to 22nm, if I am not mistaken. So, what did they do. They created something that was like 1.51 cores and market it as 2 full cores.
Intel is in a manufacturing disadvantage today. It's at 10nm with AMD at 7nm and soon probably at 5nm. So, what can they do, considering that they can't put 12 or 16 big cores in their mainstream chips? They put 8 big cores and 8 tiny cores. Considering that ARM manufacturers advertise their 4+4 designs as octa cores and no one sued them by now, Intel can easily market their 8+8 cores designs as 16 cores.

No one have the time to learn about everything. And there is no point in doing so. We buy dozens of products every month and usually we do not do any meaningful research to see if those products are the best options out there. From refrigerators, to appliances, to clothes, to furniture, to tools, to food, to about everything. We just grab something and rush to pay and return home. We don't read a dozen reviews, neither we search even more, to see if those reviews are not biased.

I think the most interesting thing would be having a hardware- guided scheduling. It would be interesting to see the performance uplift with better work distribution amongst the cores.

Not sure for PCIe 6.0 is too soon for Sapphire maybe in Granite or Diamond on not in no one Rapids but is more possible to be implemented for first in ibm power11 in 2024 or 2025.

Reminds me of P45 era, man that was a helluva mess.

I like all the haters in the comments...
If AMD would have come with X670 and PCie 5.0 and DDR5, oh boy, everyone would be extatic.
If Intel is doing it, well, neah, it isn't needed, why bother with pcie 5, why do we need ddr5? It is expensive, blah blah blah.
People, get real. Competition is good. Intel is getting these technologies out first and that is what matters. 20% higher ipc means about 10% higher ipc vs zen 3. In 2021, i hope.

No one has time to learn some base specs when decide to buy something for hundred bucks? LoL!
No, some people just prefer to spend their time with their families, or just away from a pc monitor trying to understand specs.

And if they have enough money, they just pay people who are spending their time in front of a screen, reading spec and reviews, while commenting on forums about how educated they are, to choose for them.

Read time for specs 1 minute. Read time for review half hour...How to spend most of time with their families... Sleep, eat, defecated, watch stupid tv shows, serials or stupid sports.
LoL! I forgot! Watch ton of lie fake advertising every 15 minutes.

Skipping Rocket lake. This is the only CPU worth getting.

What CPU? The announcement is for a whole gen, not a product.

You have zero idea what you're talking about. For all you know you do get the 20% IPC, but the clock peaks at 2 Ghz. :rockout:

I see core counts also don't matter to you, so here's your 12th Gen Dual core Alder Lake at 2 Ghz. Enjoy. - signed, Intel.
And because you're the only one convinced, they'll even spoil the fact that it can come with 'up to' 3200mhz DDR4!

Yeah, no... the marketing was disingenuous and the architecture was a massive design failure. The performance just wasn't there so AMD effectively oversold it with misleading marketing. And they got burned for it, rightly so. Just stop playing the poor puppy AMD card, because really, its so sad and we know better.

You need to spend time before you are ready to understand specs in 1 minute and a review in half hour.

I'd like to see that 20% IPC increase. Hope it will turn out to be true but I have my doubts.

Yeah, just like Rocket Lake was supposed to feature "double diget increases" in IPC, yet as anandtech showed in many consumer applications its barely any faster, and sometimes slower, then comet lake. Far cry from the jumps from zen 2 to zen 3 provided.

This will likely have "up to 20% in AVX 512, then 3% everywhere else. And it will have to contend with zen 4, which should feature significant improvements of its own.
