As predicted back in June, Intel has introduced a series of price cuts for a wide range of PC processors. The most notable of these is a 47.6% cut in the price of the Intel Core i7 950 quad-core processor, from US $562 to $294. This heats up competition severely in the $250~$300 bracket with Intel-AMD competition as well as competition among Intel processors of various platforms. In this bracket, you will now find the Core i7 860 priced at $283, Core i7 870 and Core i7 930 at $289; and now Core i7 950 at $294, quite a mix danger-close to each other. If you add AMD to the concoction, the six-core Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition is going for $290. If you're a high-end dual-core fan, Intel has Core i5 670 for you at $299. In addition to this, Intel released some new chips that include Core i3 560 at $138, Pentium Dual Core E6800 at US$86, and Celeron E3500 at $53.

dang just last week i built a 930 for 289 if i would have waited then could have gotten a 950 for $5 more! oh well, the 930 is at 4.1ghz at 1.3v

I believe it is D0, the pity is intel are neglecting mainsteam quad cores at 32nm, high end gets 32nm, as does low end, hec even xeons, but they're holding off 32nm quads for the masses, probably waiting to cash in on sandy bridge.

good to see such a beast of a chip get down to the right price, or close to it.

I was waiting to know when exactly they will reduce the prices. I hope Intel gives a warning if they plan on reducing EE chip prices so i can sell off my processor lol.

so this means there is a price cut on the 1055 and 1090 from AMD? Me Grin :D

Intel may be in my future. I love price cuts.

Very awesome.:)

But my 920 is still a beastly CPU. I guess I'll wait for the 6-core Intel CPU's to get cheaper.

Or if Bulldozer hurrys up and comes out and it's awesome, i may go that route depending on my funds.

Edit: Just to get this out there, an i7 920 is only $270 on amazon... amazing.

The 930 has been on sale for $199 at microcenter for almost a year now, and it was the 920 before that.

You know for a socket that everyone says is dead, they sure do like releasing new processors for it.

I think it's great they're releasing CPU's for an older socket, some people can't afford to move to the newer ones.

And even more don't really have a need to. I mean with the Q9X50 processors still holding their own there is little need to move to totally new platform for most people, even gamers.

Anyone else with me on saying who cares on the 950 price drop?

Its nice if your just now doing a build. I think everyone would prefer the 970 to be priced where the 950 was at the very least. That would get me excited.

Intel will milk that cash cow for as long as it's still mooing.

Wow this is great news. I wonder if MicroCenter plans on adjusting the price. Now just need to wait and see what AMD does with the 1090t. :D

Why does Intel keep releasing dual cores?
It would be nice for me to build a Intel Quad core or Six core at a lower price, but due to the high prices of quad cores from intel, i am going to go build a AMD six core and save myself what 300 bucks i am guessing. Intel needs to release more quad's or drop the prices on their quad cores big time. AMD is way cheaper i swear

Also another thing, why release another celeron with the same specs at my e3300 only with higher speed?
ugh, why not release a celeron with l3 cache and better specs?

The problem with that is that the 1055T is what? $200. And the i5 750 is what? $195. And the i5 750 actually performs better in almost everything, including games and a lot of encoding/compression tasks that you would think the 1055T would excel at. The only place the 1055T pulls ahead is a few very specific rendering applications.

The same reason AMD releases a X4 620 then 630 then 635 then 640. Because when you release a higher clocked chip in the same family, it gives people more options, and more options is good. Especially in this instance where the E3500 is taking over the same price point of the E3300, so people see it as a free speed increase. It is easy for either Intel or AMD to simply raise the multiplier and it is a new product with a higher clock speed.

Do you think i should build a super AMD six core as my main gaming rig or go with something else?

I think you should do whatever you think is best.

However, I think it is a common misconception that Intel is overprices, mainly caused by people seeing the high end i7 processor prices and being sticker shocked. I agree that those are way overpriced, a 970 should not cost $900 and isn't worth the price at all. However the more reasonable 920/930 and 750/760/860 are actually very decent values.

Your money might go a little bit further on the motherboard side with AMD though, but not a whole lot.

I plan to go with this cpu
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 ...

and buy a gtx 460 to go along with it. I plan to go with the cpu+mb deal , than add the other stuff to it. I should save about what 200-300 bucks, which will be good. Going to start to order stuff early oct :)

peace

be nice if the 875k would drop. need that for my current build

Why is nobody thanking AMD for the (Intel's) price drops?

Thanks AMD..lol. I'm going intel to try diff things. I always been an AMD guy.

In my opinion the real problem is this: Intel sells too many chips. There are SIX Intel processors on newegg priced between $275 and $300. I mean, come on.

Isnt i5 a quad ?
