Price drops = good news. Let's see what prices AMD will offer, their prices always seemed to be fair. After all these crazy technology races prices are always so confusing.

i5 700 = 4 cores/4 threads
i5 600 = 2 cores/4 threads

I'm one of the fortunate ones to have a Micro Center close by me here where I live. Gonna get the i7 950 as soon as the price is $200 and they actually have it in stock. Already ordered my ASRock X58 Extreme mobo in anticipation of the 950 coming in. If it never does, then it's the 930 for me. Do wish some of the faster i7's like the 960 were this price now, probably will be right before the next gen comes out.

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 ...

and buy a gtx 460 to go along with it. I plan to go with the cpu+mb deal , than add the other stuff to it. I should save about what 200-300 bucks, which will be good. Going to start to order stuff early oct

If you want a good multi-core AMD CPU, you should go with the Phenom II X4 965. That will get you higher FPS in games than the 1055T as they don't recognize 6 cores yet.

I see no problem with him future proofing a bit, the 1055T is a great CPU even in games that don't utilize all 6 cores.

I mean if you can afford something better, then why not?

Well that's true to an extent, but i mean as of now it's still a pretty cheap CPU and when software does get there, it'll still perform great. You also have to remember that newer chips doesn't mean cheap. You get what's best now so that in the future you still hanging on without having to swap CPU's all the time.(unless he has the funds)

Im mean if he wants to wait for the 8cores or newer 6 cores, then that's fine, he can get that 965 which is also great and it's cheap to. But like i said, you want it to last.

Then again, we're at a point in CPU development where we don't need new CPU's for the mainstream market yet, i mean an overclocked E8400 can still get the job done most of the time. So really if he goes with that 965, it's still a fantastic chip.

A lot of games get a huge FPS boost from a quad and more and more will use a quad finally. The time has come to go quad and ignore the dual cores, that couldn't be said a year ago. Check this link.

If he can find a better CPU at the same price as a 1055T in a year or so, then he should just wait it out till those new chips come out.

And yes, certain games do get a performance boost from adding more cores into the mix, but we're still not at the point where even quads are fully utilized. The majority of games still run great on a fast dual core. In the future this will change, but really as of now most modern chips can get the job done for things people do on there machines today.(including gaming)

I believe it is D0, the pity is intel are neglecting mainsteam quad cores at 32nm, high end gets 32nm, as does low end, hec even xeons, but they're holding off 32nm quads for the masses, probably waiting to cash in on sandy bridge.

I agree with that. I mean definitely if you can go quad, go for it. Because like i said, even if only a few games use it fully now, later on down the line it'll still be hanging with some of the best, as opposed to dual cores which will be pretty much be dead.
