Intel Quietly Reveals 12-core i9-7920X 2.9 GHz Base Core Clock

Intel has quietly revealed base clocks for their upcoming 12-core, 24-thread Core i9-7920X processor. This particular Intel model materializes (at least for now) the only 12-core processor in Intel's X299 HEDT platform line-up on the LGA 2066 socket. A report from Videocardz pegs the new 12-core processor as having a base clock of 2.9 GHz, a full 400 MHz slower than the company's 10-core, 20-thread i9-7900X. The L3 cache amount appears as well, though it's an expected 16.5 MB (which amounts to around 1.375 MB per core.)

The chip also brought a pricing confirmation for $1,189 in tray quantities (which means final consumer prices will be higher.) On paper, this doesn't trade favorably with the competition's 12-core Threadripper offering, where AMD will be offering the same amount of cores and threads for $799 (final consumer pricing at launch) with a much more impressive 3.5 GHz base clock. Consumers will say whether a $400 price difference for going Intel over AMD is worth it for the same number of cores and threads, though it remains to be seen whether AMD's frequency advantage will translate to performance while maintaining power consumption at acceptable levels (which, from what we've seen from AMD's Ryzen, should, in theory, be true.)

For $400 more, you can get the same core count, but clocked 600Mhz slower base clock, with fewer PCIE lanes, than an equivalent Threadripper. Who else would hate to be working in intel's marketing department right about now?

That's assuming Threadripper is faster than Skylake-X.

Reality check: They're not even on-par. AMD has to play the budget brand just like their graphic cards because their products are INFERIOR.

It really depends on workload, gaming, Ryzen does OK, very out of order and heavily branching work Ryzen shows its cache latency issues. Workstation rendering and other prosumer markets where a new rig every six months to a year is where they will sell a higher volume of chips for more margin is where they aimed and hit though, and where they squarely kick Intel in the nuts.

I guess they are so INFERIOR that they got deals with Sony, and MS for consoles for years to come.

Pretty pointless to comment on something from Videocardz or WCCCPblabla sites. So many inaccurate stuff comes out from them.
 
Well this is interesting... I believe Intel is experimenting right now with their current lineup. The problem being they cannot go crazy with their current architecture otherwise power requirements shoot up which hurts Intel since that is something they have been pushing and touting for awhile. Intel is good at finding sweet spots in terms of clock speeds and power to get the numbers they want and this is probably the best they could do without the requirements starting to sky rocket and heat becoming enough of an issue mixed in with higher power. I wonder how well these will overclock, we know that the new chips will overclock very far, but with this core count its going to be interesting. I wonder how well these are going to do overall and whats going to be the verdict at the end especially when we (finally) get both threadripper and the Kabylake-X chips on the field in high core counts.
 
Not hopeful for even delidded oc frequencies. 4.5ghz max. probably on most samples. 16-core might even struggle with 4ghz delidded.
 
I think that intel's biggest issue right now is their own 7700K and its unbeatable gaming performance.
If they won't run fast enough, even next-gen 6-cores are going to lag behind it.
 
Opt for a 6950x upgrade. I am good until Threadripper 3rd gen.
 
I'm getting threadripper 1950x since it's cheaper than the only good intel option, the 6950x, and has more cores for stuff.

Same here, and don't forget all them pcie lanes we get. That's probably the biggest ace for me considering all the RAID and storage cards I need to use.

They have the glue, but are doing it bass ackwards by gluing the IHS and soldering the chips, it's really about those smaller things...
