Intel Redesigning Core i7 980X Stock HSF

Intel is working on a small design change to the Core i7 980X Extreme Edition processor. The change covers the Intel thermal solution (HSF) only, and consists of a redesigned impeller that makes it quieter, overall. This is done by downsizing the edge of the impeller blades to 0.3 mm, and perforating the impeller hub (central portion connected to the motor). The slightly revised Core i7 980X Extreme Edition package should start shipping from June 7.

Thats true, or maybe they should just release a cheaper version of the 980X, basically a i7 920 2.66ghz but 6 cores, call it the i7 970

He was pointing out that it's intels main priority to cut costs as much as possible. Also it's a win/win really. The cooler is quiter and probably cheaper. It could actually be more expensive to cut the new holes we don't really know. Also the price of an EE cpu would not change even if it came without a cooler. What your paying for with an EE cpu is its unlocked multi and the fact it is an overclockable chip.

I dont think that would ever happen lol but they should just drop it whos going to buy one and use the stock HS if you wanna runs stock get a cheaper cpu

It doesn't contradict it. Those same coolers are having a slight modification to their fans to lower noise.

Any company selling a 1000 dollar Chip should include a half decent cooler capable of cooling the CPU. If you want to buy you own cooler then offer an OEM chip. As of now Only retail chips are available. Take the extra money you save on buying OEM which isn't much but it's still money, and put it toward a cooler. JMO

I know of one such idiot, that was not only dumb enough to buy this cpu, but also used the stock cooler. They wanted to know if the cpu should always be running at 70-90 C

I told them, yes, that's how POS intel cpu runs

He was too good for an overclocked PII and ATI video. He spent about 3k dollars on some prebuilt crap that's not even faster than my cheap rig. My mom always told me that you can't fix stupid.

You're quite wrong. Such CPU's are often sold to people with too much money who don't know better.
Besides, they do sell their CPU's without cooler, the choice is yours already.

Does anyone know anyone who actually uses the stock HSF for the 980X?? I sure don't. And the people who do are probably the people who wouldnt really care about the HSF being 2% noisier than newer models...

True, but whatever they research isn't just for that cooler. You'll probably see the results in the next generation as well.
