So, a quad core CPU on an X99 platform.

Hmm, and the point of this chip is what exactly?

Point is, 7740K will be properly Soldered and will overclock to 5.1Ghz without hitting the temperature wall. I don't get it they could have release this chip on current Z270 Platform. I feel this is a waste on 299.

This won't save anyone money, this doesn't provide any features over the standard LGA 1151 chips, and actually it costs more due to the expensive motherboards. Expensive motherboards that will never see their quad-channel or 44-PCIE capabilities used (Which is why they cost more lol).

They'll see it once I upgrade the CPU in a year or two.

Help me understand this guys :S

The table TheLostSwede linked, it shows that there will be 8c/16t CPUs under Skylake X; except unless i'm reading it wrong they're gonna be dual channel? Why the step backwards, everything else being literally the same?
Sure, there's gonna be some typical 5,10% improvement over mine's, but that's not a 'feature'; so why cut down on channels, ask for more money -and- force you get a new mobo while you're at it?

(newtekie has a point regarding upgrading to 7700ks vs 7740ks. Just can't see it applying for 8-10core CPUs)

ugh not really? 2066 is what the 3rd socket change for HEDT? since the first being 1366 in like 2007/8?

HEDT moves alot slower than consumer desktops.

It is the 4th,
1366
2011
2011-v3
2066
(2011 and 2011-v3 is not compatible)

Desktop had been:
1156
1155
1150
1151

So no, its not moving that much slower, Intel still gives two generations per socket, but HEDT has a slower release cycle.

So you plan to save $100 now, to spend $400 later? (At best). This whole "Upgrade Path" myth continues to make me laugh.

-If you can spend $300. You can spend $400 (For the 6-Core).
-If you can't spend $1000 now. You think it makes sense to wait 2 years to upgrade to an outdated $1000 CPU? If you are going to throw down a grand, you are going to want the newest and greatest. Not to mention it would actually cost less to just go Z370 NOW, and then sell it all and go big in a couple years when you can actually afford it.
-Your ebay point is another excellent example of why these peasant "HEDT" CPU's are a joke. I had a friend get a x99 Mobo, and then a 10-core Broadwell-E Xeon on ebay for $240. He has overclocked it to 3.4 GHz and thus basically got a 6950X for $240. He has no need for your silly "Upgrade Path".

What a bunch of crybabies. When the X58 chipset came out people were crying that it was so expensive, the boards were expensive, the cpus were expensive, etc, etc. The smart people went with the X58 and just got the cheapest cpu the i7-920. I'm still running the X58 chipset with a Xeon CPU. The best money i've every spent on a chipset and $300+ motherboard. The "upgrade path" is there.

I never said it was "Too Expensive". I merely said that the people buying the 7740K are literally paying more for nothing! It's exactly the same as the i7-7700K, except now you are paying more for a motherboard with features you will never use. I am advocating people pay more, not less.

They'll see it once I upgrade the CPU in a year or two.

Are you saying you are going to buy the 7740K, or that you already have a 6800K? What are you going to eventually upgrade to?

If I was upgrading my current system(a 4970K) in a few months, I wouldn't bother with the 7700K, I'd buy a 7740K(or even more likely the 7640K). I wouldn't get any of the HEDT features right away, but I also wouldn't pay much more either. But then a year later, when I decide to upgrade to an 8 or 10 core, I will, without needing to upgrade the motherboard. And before you say it, HEDT motherboard aren't that much more expensive than the mainstream boards anymore. You can get good X99 boards for $150 or less now.

The last time Intel release a 4-core HEDT, not many people bought it compared to it's higher core count sibling (at least from what I see lurking around), and now they are releasing it again (if correct) with a slight twist (less PCIe lanes)

So what's gonna entice buyer into choosing this one over 7700K?

With the price of this chip and mobo you will be much better off buying a Coffee Lake 6-core on the 'lower end' platform. Probably a similar price for each but much better performance with Coffee Lake.

Better yet, just buy AMD.

ah your right we arent counting 775 people just have a super hard time remembering 8 socket types.

Or maybe they just get confused because they are considering 8 socket types when they are putting together a platform upgrade in 2017?

Your plan is to go from a 4790K to a 7700K.... Cough.... 7740K? God those are SO different lol.

Dude honestly you aren't even upgrading lol. Unless you found some way to make money switching, I have no clue why you would do that.

On another note, you sure you want to put all of your money in a platform that might pay off in 2 years? What happens if AMD beats Intel for a few years? You really want to be tied down to a platform you paid extra money for?

It's painfully obvious some people just want to be loyal to a company, and will jump through hoops to rationalize why they should buy an inferior product.

Reminds me of the people arguing the FX-8150 was a better value than the i5-2500K, just because it was "Only a little more expensive" lol.

Well...I don't see the point of this CPU personally. I thought we were finally passed the quad core chips on the HEDT platform but I guess we are not.

Interested in the updated chipset however, just wish they stuck with an entry level 6 core like before.

If AMD beats Intel in a few years, it won't be a big enough difference for me to care. And it will just lead to even cheaper prices on the used processors for my platform, because everyone will be dumping them for AMD.

Haha buddy it's just clear you hate the color red. AMD has already beaten Intel. Anything more and they are just twisting the dagger lol.

P.S. In before you bring up 7700K and don't realize it looses (Even at 5 GHz) when Ryzen uses fast RAM:

I actually love AMD. It wasn't more than about a year ago I just built myself an FX-8350 rig. Just because someone doesn't bow down to AMD as a god, doesn't mean they hate them.

Sorry, AMD hasn't beat Intel. They haven't beat them in multi-threading, and they haven't beat them in single-threading. They only thing AMD has beat Intel at is price, but that will change as Intel adjusts pricing. All AMD has managed to do is become competitive again, which is great, and means cheaper prices all around.

LOL who is bowing? I haven't owned AMD cpu's for quite a while now, but at the same time I can read a bloody graph. What benchmarks are you looking at?

-Ryzen is more efficient:
https://tpucdn.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/images/power_gaming.png

-Ryzen ties or wins Multi-Threading:
http://www.techspot.com/articles-info/1345/bench/Cinebench.png
https://img.purch.com/r/600x450/aHR...5L29yaWdpbmFsLzAyLUJsZW5kZXItTG9vcC0xLnBuZw==

-Ryzen ties practically ties gaming even when using slow RAM:
https://tpucdn.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/images/perfrel_2560_1440.png

-With fast Ram Ryzen wins in gaming overall:
http://i.imgur.com/tvtkbtb.jpg

-Ryzen Performs as well on average even when you include gaming:

So you really are bending over backwards here to say they aren't winning lol. All things equal, they are slightly outperforming both Broadwell-E and Kabylake, and they are doing it while using less energy, Furthermore the price thing isn't as simple as you and some others make it out to be. Sure, Intel can lower prices, but it's not like AMD is making small profits. The fact is AMD's new CCX methodology allows AMD to make big CPU's cheaper. In fact that is the entire point of their new architecture! It's not a coincidence they are cheaper than Intel, they were designed from the ground-up to be cheaper to produce than Intel's.

This. They've leveled the playing field. There is room for improvement but, a new architecture this competitive doesn't make it trivial for Intel to adjust to. Intel is a behemoth but, in this position, AMD has the most to gain and Intel has the most to lose but, that doesn't mean that AMD has the advantage and by no means says they have Intel beat. This merely makes AMD competitive again.
Oh yay! Another Intel socket.
While I sit here, continuing to use my 3820... I'll try to restrain my disappointment in Intel releasing skt2011-3.

When a decent board worthy of my STH10 reveals itself is when Ill make my move, until then its a waiting game,
Sick of Intel's product stuffing with hardly anything considered worthy of adding a layer.
Its gonna get interesting
