Funny thing is that Intel used this tech before AMD. With Clarkdale back in 2009 they had the CPU on one die, and the iGPU and memory controller on another.

The first time I remember "glue" like this was back when the Pentium D was a thing. Of course, multiple dies communicating with eachother via glue is not desirable compared to a monolithic design, but it's a good way to increase core count when you can't make a huge monolithic die with the number of cores you want.

Back in the PD days, it was alright, but not great, because you still had two 65nm or even 90nm Netburst dies communicating over slow glue. Today, it's not so bad with the 7nm Zen design. You still get 8 cores if a single die if that's all you need, or a bunch more if you need more cores... but at least you can get it in a single chip rather than multiple chips, or even more cores with multiple chips.
