Intel's Raja Koduri Refutes Rumors About Company Cancelling Arc Graphics

Intel's accelerated computing group head Raja Koduri, who heads the team behind the Arc "Alchemist" graphics, on late-Sunday, refuted rumors about the company shutting down the Arc graphics product line. Responding to a question to that effect on Twitter, Koduri tweeted "we are shrugging about these rumors as well. They don't help the team working hard to bring these to market, they don't help the PC graphics community..one must wonder, who do they help?..we are still in first gen and yes we had more obstacles than planned to overcome, but we persisted."

Rumors about Intel dropping the axe on Arc have been around for some time now, after repeated delays in getting the products to market, limited regional launches; and gathered steam as Intel closed down the Optane Memory business last quarter. Last week, after Intel presented a less-than-perfect outlook for its processor business hinted that it could exit "other" unprofitable businesses.

I genuinely hope they push through. They must have expected a poor outcome from the first generation but it will not benefit consumers in the long run if they pull out of the discrete graphics market. Actually, you probably need to be in the market to pull out... Problem solved!!!!

Considering that year after year the GPU becomes even more important than before, if Intel cancels ARC, it will be a suicidal move. They need the retail market, not just the server market. They will bleed money, they will hear many non flatering comments for their GPUs this year, but in 4-5 years, even if they are still behind, they will start making money from this market. Huge money, considering their ties with OEMs.

Even the worst case scenario, which is that Arc is a huge flop, and Intel only earns back a fraction of their investment is still better than cancelling the whole thing, not even having the chance to earn back anything.

Something is sure going on at Intel, Raja has been put outside all official anouncements and only give a few words on Twiter. But only time will tell the real story with Intel GPU's.

Some tend to to project their own feeling on a giant company, thinking that behave the same as a sole person..
That is, if you having a rough start then best is to stop and not even try.
But those people don`t have, obviously, the same cash reserve that can keep them afloat in 'bad times' and none of the R&D experience that take into consideration most of the problems involving making up new tech.

To my opinion, Intel will evaluate their ARC business after 'Celestial' lunch (that is ARC 3rd gen), not befor.
Reson- only ARC 4th gen will introduce a new architecture -"Xe Next HPG".

They won't cancel Arc outright, but the rumors of Enthusiast/High End Discrete Gaming GPUs being cancelled for the foreseeable future is much more plausible. I definitely see Intel going hard on Enterprise and HPC Arc and even making Arc its new integrated graphics hardware but I definitely believe that they're at least planning on cancelling discrete high end Arc beyond some very limited production Battlemage parts until the driver situation is sorted.

They can't cancel high-end Arc because it never existed. The top of the line A770 is said to be positioned between the 3060 and 3060 Ti, only with more VRAM.

Intel has been profitable for decades. Surely it can't be a financial decision to cancel ARC. It will take a couple of more years of experience to succeed and stabilize along Nvidia/AMD. But executives and stock holders aren't in this for the longer run. It is always about short term profit.

Makes sense to kill it, they missed launching their GPUs when people needed them, the drivers are awful despite having long experience making iGPUs, the GPU division would just drain resources for nothing.
They should focus on CPUs, and use all the time spent developing GPUs to improve their iGPUs, I can see Intel offering upscaling for free or accelerating Ray Tracing...etc

I'm picturing right now AMD's marketing team wishing Navi33 was earlier in order to compare performance & die size vs ARC770 (both at 6nm).
I'm not worry, I'm sure some time in the not so distant future the usual suspects will have this comparison in their sites/channels preaching how ARC future is doomed!

I think they should focus on the server and OEM market where they have some chance to compete. No one in their right mind is going to buy an Arc to play games with instead of a red or green team GPU, plus the situation will get worse when the next generation arrives.
