Internet explorer 11 on windows 10 and Steam

Yesterday I uninstalled some software and at the end of the uninstall process it opened internet explorer 11.
Since I have got edge installed sometime ago, I thought there was no internet explorer anymore.

I went to "Turn Windows features on or off" and disabled internet explorer 11, a reboot was needed.

Once booted up to the desktop I found out that all my steam games shortcut icons were all blank.... :wtf:

I tried to create new shorcuts with Steam but that also resulted in blank shortcuts.

Deleting the icon cache didn't help so I went back to "Turn Windows features on or off" and re-enabled IE 11....

After a reboot all icons were back.

I prefer to uninstall IE 11, since I dont use it but it seems Steam relies on IE 11?...

it does not. i disable that in windows features whenever I do a clean install, i usually install steam after though. sounds like a glitch is all. weird.

Well I have to leave it as is now since I'm not reinstalling windows 10 for now..

Microsoft is phasing out IE with Edge taking its place. But IE is not being deleted from systems. I do not recommend deleting it. Just don't use it any more. Eventually, it will go away completely.

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean Steam doesn't use it. Raise your voice and give feedback to them.

Can you try to disable IE 11 under "Turn Windows features on or off" and see if you got blank steam games shortcuts after a reboot?

I actually tried to disable it on one of my machines last week and couldn't find it in features. I'll give it another go after work.

Double click on one of the white shortcuts. You should get the Windows 10 dialog to pick a program to open it with. Select Internet Browser(don't select an actual browser like Firefox or Chrome, you have to actually select the generic "Internet Browser" option). The icons should then come back and work.

This is caused because the shortucts are pointing to what Windows considers a URL, not a normal program shortcut. By default Windows just opens these in IE no matter what, but without IE you have to tell Windows to open it with any Internet browser instead.

Hi,
I did and 3dmark does the same as your games shortcuts no program associated and wouldn't use firefox
I just left steam engine support it was the only way to leave feedback they do not support 3dmark functions lol

That's funny thought the listing showed internet explorer not internet browser lol
Shortcut went back to looking like 3dmark always did though after some updating recurred

It makes more sense to change the default browser to Edge.

That's why you don't set them to open with edge or steam. You set them to open with Internet Browser.

Actually my default webbrowser is Chrome....
But when I uninstalled some software it opened IE 11.

Turned off IE11, no issues in Steam. I do already have Chrome set as default so who knows.
