Is a 6800 XT with three connectors better than a 6800 XT with two?

I have a reference 6900XT (2x8 pin) and bench it with MPT at 475W without issue. The problem is cooling it. I had to put it under water or MPT wasn't even an option as the hot spot would easily run over 100C.

I’m seeing the Nitro+ and Taichi, but I don’t see the Pulse and Phantom Gamijg. I suppose I should’ve spent a bit more to get these high-tier models but oh well. I guess that means both the Pulse and PG ones are pretty similar to the reference model.
If you want to get in to how the cards built check Actually Hardcore Overclocking he's done a few video's on the PCB's.

From what i have liked was the ASROCK Sapphire and XFX as they have good coolers on them which is a requirement for me as we don't use a air conditioner in the summer when it's 30c+

Oh okay it’s good to hear that reference models are great then.
No, they're not great. But they get the job done. My 6750 XT easily runs its hotspot above 100 °C (110 is the maximum safe temp), and while I wouldn't call it loud, it's not the quietest card I've ever had, either. You can expect much lower temperatures and less noise with more expensive models (ideally).

Imagine wireless GPUs, that would definitely be something. And I see, so there’s not much more that GPUs can do from here on. I wonder how they’ll innovate from here on then.
We'll probably need to wait till graphene transistors take off & Metaverse is beamed straight into our heads o_O

We are fast approaching the limits of Silicon & while AMD or Nvidia could still stretch it out with chiplets or more cache for maybe half a decade but this is probably the tuning point for oversized & overpowered/power hungry GPU's ~ no one likes them!

I like you two. :)

When I first saw 60ghz 802.11ad, I imagined a wireless PCI-e implementation. I didn't get very good feedback from the couple tech-aware friends I had.
I feel more sane in my (for better or worse) quasi-futurism, knowing I'm not alone.

I see, I don’t have water cooling and all so I suppose it’d be impossible for me to get to 475 W anyway. Also, according to HWInfo and Adrenalin, it seems I can’t reach the desired clock speed at the power limit of my GPU. I either get clock speeds in the 2309-2409 range (I set the minimum clock speed to 2309 and the max to 2409) with the power draw being about 260-300 W or clock speeds in the 2250-2300 range with the power draw maxed out. I tried FurMark, and it was able to consistently stay at 312.5 W for an hour. I heard GPUs are automatically throttled in FurMark though, so I tried the Boundsry benchmark too. The power draw ranged from 295 to 312 W and the clock speed was in the 2309-2409 range (generally in the middle), so I suppose that’s fine. It did drop randomly once to 220 W which caused some stuttering, but that was only for a second; I presume something else caused that then. Is this normal though?

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll look into those videos then. I hope this Sapphire Pulse one has a decent cooler though I’m sure it’s much worse than the higher tier ones like the Nitro+. Also, is the experience I was having that I talked about in my reply to damric normal, or is something wrong with my OC?

I see, so they’re good enough, at least. My hot spot temps are generally below 100 degrees C, but I saw it spike to 106 degrees C for a few seconds in the Boundary benchmark. I just ramped up my fans though, and it stopped to 98. In general, are high hotspot temps fine as long as they’re below 110? Also, am I OCing correctly as I talked about in my reply to damric, or is something wrong with my OC?

That would be great for sure if they ever made something like that. Quasi-futurism is always nice to think about in terms of thinking about what could be and all.

I don't know much about OC, as I'm (obviously) not doing that with a reference card, but yeah, hotspot temps below 110 °C are fine.

That’s good to hear! They usually stay below 100 degrees C, so thag definitely eeems great. My GPU temp generally stays below 75 degrees C even under heavy load which seems great too. What kind of GPU temps do you get?

with only 2 connectors. Is the Pulse worse than the Phantom Gaming then, or are they the same?

Did you ever check any reviews and compared the results?...

It's in the low 80s on my card. A small delta between GPU and hotspot temp usually indicates good contact between the GPU and the cooler.

I was unable to find any reviews for the Pulse and Phantom Gaming. Even on techpowerup, I could only find reviews for the Nitro+ and Taichi. I just assumed the Phantom Gaming and Pulse are similar to the reference card since I can’t find any information about them. I’m sure they’re closer to the reference card than the high-tier AIBs anyway.

Oh okay that’s good to hear. yeah, I’m getting in the mid 70s to low 80s range which definitely seems good then. And that’s good that a small delta means that the GPU cooling is great in terms of good contact. Thanks!
