Is Firefox more efficient for playing MPEG-4 files than VLC and mpv?

I find mpv player far superior to anything else I've ever tried. Once you learn the hotkeys it's a powerhouse. Haven't messed with custom stuff yet, and that's another story. Definitely not for everyone (no GUI), but it's fast and efficient enough for my needs.

Give Potplayer a try if you haven't. Sounds like you might really enjoy it

It's worth giving PotPlayer a go since it's a free download.

As a longtime VLC user I tried it a few times, didn't see any worthwhile differentiation, and promptly deleted it a week later. But everyone's usage case is different.

But I'm old and I'm tired of learning new user interfaces just for the sake of it which is why I still use VLC Player, GIMP photo editor, Handbrake, Kodi/XBMC and other legacy tools that some here would laugh at.

Tried it long ago when I ditched VLC stutter fest and Classic media player stone plates. Tried all of those open source and non-open source alternatives, tried all of them man. Potplayer didn't cut it for me. Maybe it will be easier to understand when I tell you I'm using ImageGlass as a photo viewer, portable Photoshop 8.0 and MusicBee for the audio reproduction. Less is always more in my book, and it's even more pronounced as I'm getting older and more grumpy each day.
Although MusicBee is an Africanized bee (killer bee) for those that understand

I see in that case it makes sense. Pot is like a Swiss knife chock full of options. ImageGlass ftw tho :toast:

I've tested mpv on windows as well, but it works better on BSD and Linux systems.
Configuration is much easier on Linux. You have only one configuration file that is usually in the exact same location on BSD and Linux systems.

And the settings are easy to adjust. For example, you can easily change the color, font, size, position, etc of subtitles.
I've also managed to get mpv audio to play on Jack instead of PulseAudio.

It may seem a bit challenging to customize your media player via a configuration file. But thanks to the good documentation, there is usually nothing difficult about it.
You will find almost everything you need on this page: https://mpv.io/manual/stable/
