Is Nvidia GTX 1070 worth the upgrade from GTX 970?

hi,
my gtx 970 just died & i'm planing to buy a new card. i'm considering buying the gtx 1070 and most likely the zotac or palit brand, but is it worth the money? other option is just to buy another gtx 970 which is dropping almost half of the gtx 1070 price in my country, i only play on FHD and dont have any plan on 4K as a consideration. and the 1070 is a bit overpriced in my country, around $100-150 more than the MSRP. or should i wait for the gtx 1060?

thanks

If you go for the upgrade, that would be nuts in my eyes. You have to consider what your screen can take, and if you dont play any higher than 1920x1080, the GFX 1070 is way to powerfull and you wont be able to get the best of it out.

It depends how desperate you are to play games now that your 970 has died. If you have a spare old card that will allow you to still play games, then I would definitely WAIT for the 1060 non-FE pricing before rushing into anything. (I would NOT buy another 970.)

Wait for custom RX 480s & GTX 1060s. These cards are all you need at 1080p.

Do not go for the 1070 the extra performance you gain wont bee seen by your eyes, only felt by your wallet.
Probably wait for the Rx 480 custom boards or a 970.

im using my old quadro 4000 card for now,and its suck so much that i can only get 40fps in bf4 using the low settings. but i can wait until the 1060 comes out, i'm just worried of the 192 bit bandwidth, will it be a bottle neck, thanks.

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
One need to take into account that with current pricing 970 is still better perf/$.
1070 brings you to about 980Ti stock levels.

AMD's RX 480 has much better perf/$, so is 1060 at non-FE price (who knows when we'll see it), but they are about 15-18% faster than 970 anyhow.

So it's a sidegrade for you.
It might still be a smart thing to do, given you can sell your 970 for a good price, as newer cards come with more VRAM.

Well I own a GTX1070 and currently playing at 1080p.
I'm able to play games with eye-candy at a steady 60fps.
I may upgrade to 1440p next year.

I dont know how much rx 480 in your country, in my country its around $320 for the xfx black edition version and $300 for the standard refrence, but i dont plan to buy one, i will stick on waiting for the 1060, or save more to buy the 1070 if the 1060 is not as good as nvidia claim.

Thank you for all the help

Does it let you play recent games on ultra/decent settings with MSAA at a steady 60fps with your GTX970?

Consider your power bill too. Another 970 might have a better $/perf, but will use more power doing so and could cost you in the long run.

I don't think it's fair to compare the cost of the 1070 to the 970 since they're not near the same performance. According to Anandtech, MSRP is $250 USD and it's scheduled for launch in 11 days. Might as well wait. Worst case, it'll push 970 prices down for you.

I don't see the 1060 or RX480 being much more than a minor upgrade over the 970 anyway, i appreciate the op needs a new card but I'd personally like to jump to something higher if I could.

But yeah I guess wait for custom 1060\rx480 reviews and then go from there.

it depends on your wallet imo. if you should go for 480/1060 duo, i would buy the 480 just because its cheaper and the difference will be max 15% (thats what nvidia slides showed at least), imo the price difference is not worth it. now, if you can go for the 1070, then by all means go for it, just not the fe edition, its a great card and it has no opponent atm.

I disagree that a 1070 is too powerful. If you go crazy with the settings in some of the latest games you will bring it too its knees(200% res scale etc..)

Depends what refresh rate monitor you have too. If you have 144hz then its a worth while upgrade for sure since you will be able to use higher settings and still get the 140ish fps you need.

The 1070 might be too powerful right now, but it'll be better for future games that tax it more.

indeed! thats the general rule. my 5830 managed to play witcher 3 and fallout 4, granted it played them in the lowest possible settings, but it did play them, for a 2010 card that amazed me. the only "problem" that i can find with the 1070 in this case, is the fact that it hasnt got hardware accelerated async support and i dont know if it will fare well with future titles. only time will tell though.

I usually go for more midrange cards for that reason. While others are riding out their high-end expensive cards, those who bought midrange cards with the same budget can now afford to buy again to reap the benefits of newer feature sets.

..although with that said, high-end cards are reeeeeealllllyy nice to have.

Seriously, I with the ones on waiting on the final word on 1060 and the RX480. 1080P don't need crazy high end cards unless you doing some crazy stuff like downsampling or high FPS with a 144Hz monitor.

I remember when I had 2nd hand OG Titan that died (yes, I killed a Titan). Had to use a old BFG GTX275 while the Titan was off to RMA land. Funny thing, it ran Skyrim darn fine on High settings at 1080P. You just really don't need crazy powerful cards for that res anymore. Only thing I think with the advantage of the 1070, you could go for some good long years on that if you stay at 1080P.

Wait for 1060.
Actually RX 480 (wait for non-ref) is pretty decent for 1080p.
1070 is too powerful for 1080p. When 1070 is just enough for 1080p Nvidia and AMD will have something better and cheaper.

since your card is dead, it's just going to come down to how much you want to spend. The advantage of getting a GTX 1070 is that you can max any game no sweat at 1080p. Plus if you use something like DSR on your card it will just be that much better with the higher card.

If your really wanting to save the money, I would wait for customs of both RX 480 and GTX 1060 and then decide between the two and get from the newest generation unless you get a steal of a deal from a previous gen card.

But that is just my opinion.

hi,
my gtx 970 just died & i'm planing to buy a new card. i'm considering buying the gtx 1070 and most likely the zotac or palit brand, but is it worth the money? other option is just to buy another gtx 970 which is dropping almost half of the gtx 1070 price in my country, i only play on FHD and dont have any plan on 4K as a consideration. and the 1070 is a bit overpriced in my country, around $100-150 more than the MSRP. or should i wait for the gtx 1060?
thanks

First of all, what monitor do you have? If it is a 100+ Hz panel, then the GTX 1070 is definitely your best choice. Please note that "best" largely depends on your budget.

And the others saying it is too powerful... Really? Seriously? I thought this was an enthusiast forum where a steady 60 FPS is desired or at least is aimed for.

Might want to take a look at this:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1070/1.html

There are plenty of demanding titles that already give the GTX 1070 a run for its money, even at 1080p:

Average FPS
ANNO - 59.1
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate -71.2
Crysis 3 - 69
Hitman - 71.8
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt HairWorks disabled - 81.5

If you go for the upgrade, that would be nuts in my eyes. You have to consider what your screen can take, and if you dont play any higher than 1920x1080, the GFX 1070 is way to powerfull and you wont be able to get the best of it out.

Nonsense. There is no such thing as "too powerful". Besides, GTX 1070 is almost twice as fast as GTX 970 in some cases so yeah, it's a worthwhile upgrade if you ask me.

I kinda follow the rule of graphic card I'm upgrading to being twice as fast as the one I own. When they achieve that I feel like upgrading. It usually happens every 2 generations or so. Sometimes even faster, like it did with HD5000 series that were twice as fast right after HD4000 series. But that doesn't happen that often.
