In the 'mainboard' section of CPU-Z it says 'link width' 4x, does this mean that my card is running @ 4x instead of 16x

should be agp 4x try everest

WTF Everest is saying this:

Field Value
Bus Type PCI Express x16 @ x4

Why the f*ck is my PCI-E card running @ only 4x

No mine says x16 for both link width and max supported in CPU-Z, you must have a BIOS option somewhere to set link width? dont know your motherboard so cant say, I would suggest that if you cannot find the answer in your BIOS, re-flash/update BIOS...sometimes that just tends to straighten things out, you know how it sets every tweak you make back to default when you update....annoying isnt it, in your case it may be the solution!

set the PCI-E in your bios to x16

Im really pissed off now, Ive only just seen in the motherboard manual that my board only supports x4 mode, surely I must be losing performance  bloody ASUS  it didnt state this online when I purchased it :(

PS I have no BIOS option for PCI-E

You need to udate your motherboard BIOS.

here http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Version 0501 2006/02/16 update
OS All
Description P4V800D-X BIOS 0501
Fix full screen logo show twice when using SATA HDD and CD-ROM at primary after set "On-board SATA" to RAID.
Revise the accuracy of CPU and MB temperature in BIOS
Fix DMI string "PCIEX16" to "PCIEX4" defined in SYSTEM_SLOT_INFO_2

I did see that update, but I wasnt sure what it meant by DMI string etc..............so you think that could work :)

Looks like it, at the moment you are only getting a quarter of the possible bandwidth to your card, from the BIOS update it would appear that it was just a bug and the update should reconfig status/bandwidth of the port.......hopefully.:respect:

I just flashed the BIOS and its still the same :(

p4v800d-x is a x4 mode only board

All this bios update will do is correct the x16 reading. This board runs a pci-e graphics card worse than the agp variant. You and I need to buy a real pci-e board (I have one of these turkeys)

Hookey have'nt you just bought that board? Seem to remember you having something else, if so I'd just RMA the muvvaa!

Hookey Street...I think that you have your card in the wrong slot. Remember, the earlier crossfire boards had a slot running at x16 and one at x4 (I think). Try it in the other PCIe X16 slot. Oh yeah and my ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 (from the budget section of Asus) runs full x16 bandwidth :p.

And mine also! :D

I have the same mobo, surely it must be x16!!!!
If it is only x4, i did'nt think they made them x4 anymore!!!!!
soz Hookey mate, a big boob by me!!!!

PS. by the way the mobo has one pci-e and one agp, just thought i let you guys know.

Check here:http://uk.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=0&model=942&modelmenu=1

Look it says:

PCI-Express
PCI Express is the latest I/O interconnect technology that will replace the existing PCI. With a bus bandwidth 4 times higher than that of AGP 8X interface, PCI Express x16 bus performs much better than AGP 8X in applications such as 3D gaming. PCI Express x1 also outperforms PCI interface with its exceptional high bandwidth up to 500MB/s. The high speed PCI Express interface creates new usages on desktop PCs e.g., Gigabit LAN, 1394b, and high-speed RAID systems.

Then i found this, sneaky buggers.

Expansion Slots 1 x AGP 8X
1 x PCI Express x16 (x4 mode only)
3 x PCI

x16 slot x4 mode only

if you google "p4v800d-x x4 mode only" you'll find some hits . It doesnt say it in my manual but it says x4 mode only in the downloadable manual from the asus site

from the benchmarks ive seen the pci-e versions of 6800's perform WORSE than the agp versions ,the pci-e on this board seems pointless. Ive yet to find any 7900gt benchmarks on this mobo .x1800x's say native x16 lane so they might perform worse than 7900's but thats probably just me hoping. Oh well ,its only £30 down the drain and its ok as a stepping stone, my last mobo didnt have raid or dual channel ddr or 4 ddr slots
