Hello fellow TPU'ers:laugh:

I'm having a really annoying issue with a new laptop and DVD-rw/cd drive my dad bought with it. The new laptop is running windows 7 64 bit and I don't have much time to write this, otherwise I would give you all the spec's I could. All I can tell you without going into depth is that it has an AMD Athlon Neo X2 dual core L335 1.6ghz, 4GB ram, and a 500gb unknown harddrive. I am on a business trip at the moment and need to get this external cd drive working!!:banghead: Whenever I plug it in it shows up in my computer as DVD RW drive (F:). If I put a cd in the drive nothing happens on the laptop, and then if I double click the DVD rw drive (F:) it ejects the drive and asks me to insert a disc (even if there is one inside). Any help would be appreciated and this is a brand new HP laptop so I'm not sure what I've done wrong. In device manager it tells me all the drivers are installed and it is "working correctly".

If you need anymore information ask! I will gladly find it for you:rockout:

Any help on how to check if it's scsi or ide? I was reading about the different types of drives today so I kind of know what your talking about, and trust me bud I've goofed around with this thing trying goofy stuff for 3 hours

Sounds like the drive burned out, or rather the laser is dead on it.

Since it's brand new it leads me to believe its actually a software issue, not hardware.

I tend to agree with newtekie1; but, if you believe the drive may not be defective, then:

1. Test on another computer or take it to a place that may let you test it or test it for you.

2. Try going to Device Manager , right click on the drive and select uninstall and then in the menu at the top of device manager under Action click on Scan for hardware changes. Re-boot and see if it starts working. Just a shot in the dark.

You don't say which brand it is; but, go to the manufacturer's web page and see if they have any updated drivers or firmware for the drive.

Just FYI: You can use Speccy and Nero InfoTool to find out more about your system and drives.:)

Well, thanks for all the info, especially about those programs you mentioned. I've been looking for something more into depth than just CPU-z, so thanks. I did just as you said in the device manager and the only change I noticed is that the drive seemed like it was reading and the green light stayed on, instead of just flashing 3 times as usual. To be honest, im not 100% sure on which brand, but do you know if there are drivers usually made for cd drives? Thanks.
