Lag Spikes with Asus RT-N56U

So, I had another router, it was a d-link, don't remember the model, and it worked fine for me. It was very consistent and seemed okay, but then it started to die on me every now and then, so I went to the store, asked for assistance and they asked me what I wanted the router for. I told them gaming and they suggested the Asus RT-N56U. I buy it, I hook it up, and I find out that I had always had a slight more ping because my previous router wasn't that great, so this new router made everything amazingly fast.

Now, a week later, I'm getting huge lag spikes, even with only one device connected. I play online games a lot, so that ping spike/difference is huge. And even when doing small stuff like browser stuff, it spikes every now and then, maybe once every fifteen or so minutes.

The firmware in the router is up-to-date. I tried connecting the modem directly to a device when the router was acting up and all the lag ceased, so I know it's the router. The times it does it are random and, in my area, it even happens when no one else is online. I can check what devices are connected to my router through the 192.168.1.1 page and there's no other "unknown" devices connected when it happens. All my devices, except the mobile phones, are hardwired into the router, so it can't be interference. It's default settings on the router. I didn't touch anything in the settings, left it with default, because I didn't feel I needed to change anything with how smoothly it was running in the beginning, but now I feel like something needs to be changed.

Any ideas anybody?

Completely factory hardware reset and then reflash the firmware of the router and let us know.
