Latest Version of Windows Live Messenger Will Not Run in an x64 Environment

Runs fine with Vista x64 here, running as 32bit :D

This story is incorrect, as this info from the blog run by the programmers who build this software shows:
http://messengersays.spaces.live.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0

A special note for those of you running Messenger 8.5 Beta on Windows XP 64-bit or Windows 2003 Server: the final version of Messenger 8.5 will not install or run on your OS. We don’t want you to get stuck out in the cold so you will not receive the mandatory upgrade to the final version. However, these operating systems won’t be supported by future Messenger versions

HTH

No. If you complain about Microsoft so much, THEN STOP USING THEIR SOFTWARE! Seriously. It's pathetic, you all complain and say MS sucks, but then again, you're all on MS windows!!

Here's an idea, stop using windows, and get linux if it's so much better. :shadedshu

dude, im on Gentoo right now! ill probably move to linux as an alternative to windows when a, more devs start writing popular games natively for unix based along side windows based games && || /*im programming right now lol*/ wine gets directx 10 emulation working!

another reason you should dump msn messanger all togheter
and get some PROPER messenger like Trillian :nutkick:

Trillian owns every other messenger hands down, the only thing i dont like is that alot of the extras like video sharing and file sharing dont work. Not a big deal since I just use it for chat only and if i need the extras I will get on regular yahoo or whatever.

But Windows Live can go to hell if you ask me. That stupid "My Sharing Folder" crap just gets on my nerves and is the main reason I took it off. That and it disables the older versions so you are forced to download the upgraded Live version :banghead:

So, it turns out that Microsoft was developing a new version of Windows Live Messenger, released it, and is trying to get everyone on the upgrade bandwagon. While everyone running the previous/beta versions of Windows Live Messenger will be getting pretty prompts, it seems that there is a small problem. Anyone running a 64-bit operating environment, whether or not you're running XP or Vista, cannot upgrade to the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. In fact, it almost seems like Microsoft has dumped an x64 version of Windows Live Messenger altogether. The most recent version available for x64 customers is 8.1, while the current version is 8.5.

Ummmmm..... ?

Where do i get 8.1 x64? And where is 8.5 x64??

you cant get different installers - this 'fact' is that it doesn't work on x64 windows.

I have never used messenger. No seriously, I don't even have that "Live Messenger".
Never found a real good reason why I should use it.

As for Mac's , I have absolutely nothing against them. I have worked on a Mac for several years when I was learning how to make music, and I found it at the end rather easy to use.
In my eyes I see a computer as a tool, and don't really care if it's a PC, Mac or just a simple PDA.
There is no reason to try and make a "war" between the two different systems. Some Mac's even use Intel CPU's.

All modern macs do. Intel CPU, intel chipset on mobo (and often intel HD audio/intel wireless), combined with either Intel video or Nvidia/ATI video cards.

Wait.. they ARE a normal PC! The only thing OSX has for it, is that because they have tight hardware control they can tailor software for it - VM fusion for example, lets you VM vista will full 3D capability. This cant be done on PC, because there is so many video cards and drivers for PC, that it would be a nightmare to make it all compatible.

kinda pisses me off, i have a laptop bag from the Windows Live Messenger Beta test, i was a key tester in the damn thing sent in bug reports daily to MS, and had it long before it went public, and now this shit, damn you MS, why do you have to cut out your beta testers

 They're not even considered PC's.

Can you overclock a Mac? Nope. Can you overclock a PC? Yes- but not always in BIOS (CPUFSB ftw!!). This is one of many reasons why I'll nver use a mac.

pssst... you can run vista via bootcamp, and OC through software just the same...

Wow....even MS can't release the correct news. What a bunch of idiots.

XP x64 running...guess what? Messenger 8.5.

Yup that's right, 8.5 because it DOES install.

The new "unified" install package is what is not fully 64-bit compatible, but there are .msi files available that will allow you to install the program you wish.

PM if you want the link.

So I'm afraid, that this news is false.

mine autoupdated. this backs up your comment about the installer.

We've known about it since the very first BETA of the unified package installer. It's a problem that's brought up every single day with the BETA team, but they don't seem to be making an effort to fix it because Vista x64 is unaffected.

i cant even get MSN live to work on my new mini rig :O

Fresh vista install, nothin but winupdates - MSN 8.1 and 8.5 refuse to sign in.
