you have to buy 3 diffent peices of hardware verse sli 2
cross fire mobo ati master card and ati secondary card
verse sli mobo and 2 idencal sli cards

and you use an extanal wire that goes form a vga input to the dvi input on the other card and then it goes to dvi input to the monter (u can use dvi to vga convter on moniter in put)

dont get me wrong guys i am not down ati at all there crossfire puts up great numbers but seems a bit more complex setup wise then nvidia not that that a bad thing cause the wire r in back of your rig and onces you hook it up you probaly wont mess with it very much and it probably doesn't take any longer to connect the vga wire in the back then it does to connect the gold fingers on the sli cards

but anyway is this how crossfire works?

I think you pretty much have it there, but I believe that the part of the cable that goes from card to card is DVI only (the monitor part could be VGA though). I could be wrong though.

I guess the positive points of crossfire are:

-if you bought your first card a while ago (before crossfire was available) it will still work with crossfire so long as you buy a master card of the same series
-cards do not have to be identical, just same series (X800, X850, X1600, etc.)
-supertiling is supposed to work pretty well
-some models do not require a master card (I don't really know the current story on this but I heard the X1600s don't require a master)
-ATI motherboard not required (certain intel chipsets, 975 something or something work with crossfire)
