Can always check out the Drakensang games.
They don't use D&D rules, it's based on a Germany tabletop game, if I remember correctly. Since things aren't D&D rule based, there is a bit of a learning curve, but I still liked it.

I enjoyed Drakensang: The Dark Eye (this was the first game), I did pick up the second one, River of Time, but I had never got around to playing it.

I agree with 54thvoid, the game was supposedly built to be a RPGMMO but they abandoned the idea. It's heavily influenced by WoW and the Elder Scrolls games (especially the Fatsesworn expansion) as they employed many of those designers in the making of the game. I would personally recommend playing the game with a gamepad over keyboard (even though I prefer keyboard)

This^^, i still own the originals from when me and the wife played. i hope they updated \ fixed the coop side for the late part of the game.

Awesome game all the same and be easy to run too and should have a editor with it too which was hell load of fun along side of playing a DM.

All so worth while checking out would be

Baldurs Gate 3 ( still in the making )

Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 , both great games and gets real crazy with friends\family.

The price of entry is a bit high, but 'the RPG open world thing' works quite well in Elder Scrolls Online and its very playable solo. If you can snag a deal on it somewhere, do take a look. Its very enjoyable, very grindy, but also has quite a lot to offer. Not worth the full price though, IMHO, Bethesda is keeping it priced way too high for what it is. Character builds are however completely free form, you can rank any skill combo you want beyond a set of class skill lines. Its not very deep in that sense, but has enough to keep you going and experimenting. The world is effin huge. In that MMO corner, I can also recommend Guild Wars 2, which deploys similar tricks successfully, but is arguably more playable and flows better.

I would say right now the most interesting upcoming game is Baldur's Gate 3.
You did say D&D... Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced Edition comes to mind, as is the aforementioned Neverwinter Nights and more out of that/those stables. If you haven't played Baldur's Gate 2, please complete your life first before moving on! Its legendary, story wise unforgettable. Game is hard - but there is a console with lua commands ;)

Kingmaker is more free-form than BG2/3, very close to D&D ruleset and gameplay systems, and again, absolutely huge world to discover. There is a sequel too, but I would let that sit on the stove a bit longer while they finish it.

I never did play Might & Magic 7....I do have Might & Magic X, but I think it's kind of....eh. If you're looking for a similar gameplay style as the game you original suggested (might and magic 7 day of the destroyer), you could look into these:

Legend of Grimrock
Legend of Grimrock 2
These two games are newer (in terms of release dates) when compared to M & M 7. They have a similar look and playstyle. I only played the first one, I thought it was decent and it kind of filled that nostalgic spot for dungeon crawlers from the past. I don't remember much about character customization, but it was a decent enough game that kept me entertained with the world and puzzles and combat.

Wizardry 8
This is probably one of my favorite dungeon crawler type games. I've restarted this game so many times trying out different character builds and I enjoyed playing through it. I still have my original copy on disc and I picked up a copy on GoG when it was on sale for maybe $4 or $5.

Dragon Age Inquisition was my first Dragon Age Game. The cut scenes and combat will bring you along. For a totally different vein 40K Warhammer 2 is a super fun romp in the Fantasy universe. Kingdoms of Amulaur is a great Game but if you did not like Dragon's Dogma chances are you won't like it. Pillars of Eternity or Vermitide 1&2 are also fun fantasy romps.

Kingdoms of Amulaur is a great Game but if you did not like Dragon's Dogma

I tried playing Dragon's Dogma three separate times and just could not get into it. The game to me just lacked any bit of personality. I had a fun time playing Kindoms of Amulaur but only after I switched from keyboard to gamepad.

I assume you also played all three witcher games?

I agree, GW2 is the better of the two.

The comical thing is that RPGMMOs really killed the "Western Action RPG" with so many great IPs going that route. Unfortunately most of these developers had little long term vision thinking their user base was a bunch of peter pans that would never grow up, get jobs, buy houses, have families. Now much of the older user base want a single player option in many of these RPGMMOs due to their lack of free time. The list of modern true single player western RPGs is small unless you start to include action games with some RPG like qualities.

witcher 2 is a great stand alone RPG, the story kind of expects you know some history of the world which you probably already have from 3

the first witcher game was mediocre on launch but definitely improved with the free enhancements. A definite must for fans of the series but skip able if you don't really care for it. I would recommend the Witcher 2 though.
