Looking to upgrade parent's computer- suggestion?

When I start parting out my dual XEON rig and sell off excess and rebuild a smaller, simpler but still useful gaming machine, I'll probably have some money leftover so I thought I'd also kick my parent's PC a notch or 2.

My parent's PC is a walmart POS with fusion CPU, max 4GB RAM (single slot, never worked with 8GB or larger), 2 SATA port, no PCI or PCIe slot, and is basically dead end for upgrading. Right now it's slow as heck, stutters a lot with streaming video and DVD playback, takes a few minutes just to start the web browser, etc. It's like someone shoved a sub-$100 worth of laptop hardware in a desktop case (and looks like that too, there's lots of empty space inside)

I wanted to get a decent upgrade. What would be a good basic AMD upgrade be like? I was thinking of A-series with APU. All I want is for the new computer to perform better than walmart POS and last a few years or so.

The newer AMD APUs are very impressive for budget builds. I just built (and sold) an A8-6600K/FM2+ system that cost me only $500 with all new parts (see my system specs). The brand new Kaveri APUs are even more impressive, although a bit expensive for budget builds (~$160 - $190). If you use an FM2+ board, you can upgrade to Kaveri later if necessary, when cheaper parts become available.
