LOW 3dMark scores with my X1950pro 256mb xtream pcie

What if I upgrade my cpu from my current P4 630 to a P4-661 or a P4-670 ?...
After the upgrade, would it get me to the 10000 in 3dmark05 (free version)?

P4 is terrible at gaming, you could OC your current CPU (given you have good enough cooling, RAM and mobo to do so) then you would probably touch 10k, but its not worth upgrading to any form of P4.

well IDK about that never missed with the settings in CCC just put it on best performance, it should change shouldnt it to the settings in 3dmark ?

Last night i did some messing with my storage system.

In 3dm05, my x1800xl 256MB gets 7K, and my x1950GT 'super' 512MB gets 8,500 - 9K and 10K are unrealistic for most systems, you either need a core 2 Duo or an overclocked CPU to push them that high.

And as others have said: the entire P4 range in socket 775 is garbage, overclock if you want, but dont bother spending money on one. (and note: Core 2 chips are not a P4.)

I must say, Im quite satisfied with my score now, my system runs stable and that with my noiseless FSP Group 300watt PSU..

congrats on the CPU overclock, especially getting such a points boost.

I think theres more left in the card, so more CPU overclock would help - you've got a good PSU (i have the 200W version running my netbox) but just be careful not to use too much power with the OCing.

Are P4's really that bad for gaming? My Athlon at 2.6 GHz(217 x 12) got 1011 CPU score in 06, and 4370 in 05. Even without an OC, I'm always able to get over 9000 in 05..

yeah there not that good cuz the highest Ive gotten with my P4 and X800XL in 05 was I think in the 5900's and with the C2D was 6900 C2D @ 3.6GHz but my max was 7127 max on both card and cpu

yeah p4/p-d are crap, just AVOID AT ALL COST, really price for stock perf amd is the way to go, and for cheap overclocking, its still amd.

athlon64 x2 3600+ (80bucks)
tforce550 board (70bucks)

the boards got dfi expect class bios and is kickass, nothing for intel is its price range even comes close!!!!!

i havent seen a 3600+/tf550 combo with decent ram get to less then 2.8gz, seen a few that reached 3gz on freezer64 class cooling...... no c2d, but hey, its also over 100bucks cheaper then the cheapist c2d

No AMD can keep up with a conroe, but the cheaper models definately need overclocking (E4300, E6300) so AMD can be a better choice on a tight budget.

At the time I bought my system, there were no Core 2 Duo processors yet..Only "dual core" versions from intel, but the dual core processors was not a successor and I choose for the P4 630 64bit processor at that time, my pc is running win xp64 bit and 2x xp pro. I use my pc for all kind of applications including gaming.

I don't think my motherboard supports a "Core 2 Duo", however I could upgrade my pc with a P4 670 or a 660/661 , , this would give my system a boost and I don't need to upgrade any other hardware, also I can still use my 300W PSU and my DDR2 667 that I have.

But those processors P4 670 or a 660/661 are quite rare and expensive...

truly not worth it... those P4's had high clock speeds, but they were SLOW. Its like over-revving a crap engine, all they do is waste fuel and overheat. Some of the P4 D's used over 120W of power on their own, which is not good for your small PSU.

Seriously, C2D capable mobos are cheap - just search for mobos that mention conroe compatibility, they will work with the ram AND CPU you have currently and let you update the CPU as soon as you get the chance.


Edit: Just to give you proof C2D is the way to go - check teh specs under my user name on the left. That PC uses 310W at dual core 3D load (orthos and 3DM06) - a core 2 duo (Conroe or allendale) will give you a big speed boost AND use less power, make less heat, and they're just really nice to own

C2D is the CPU line that replaced the P4, so a mobo that runs one C2D CPU, will run them all. (All ones on the market now, at least)

List your current motherboard, and i'll look for one that matches specs with C2D support.

Edit: NVM, found it listed on page one - you really should set up a system specs thing in your user CP.

onboard video, audio, gigabit lan. supports 1333FSB CPU's (upcoming) 4x sata-II ports, only needs a 20-pin PSU (which means the board is a low power design)

Its only weakness is that it says it cant take quad cores, which wont concern you i dont think.
