You could push the Q6600 to at least 3400 per core with more voltage...I had my E6600 at 3200 with the stock voltage of 1.275 so i guess i could have it at 3000mhz with less but then what do we gain from it ?

I'm sure I could... the Q6600 is a pretty robust chip in my experience. Problem becomes dissipating the heat produced at vcores that high w/ an air setup. What you're suggesting would require a liquid cooled system to keep the temps under say 65 °C. I'm not willing to run my system at coretemps over that. Plus, the gains of 3.4 GHz vs. 3.0 GHz don't justify it in my mind.

this is one of the very basic principles of overclocking, and dosnt just apply to the cpu, ram/gpu/north bridge also come to mind.... for example a higher V Core voltage will alow a higher overclock/higher temp, but then things like you may need to overvolt the north bridge to raise the fsb (hence the overall OC) also apply......
i have 2 main speed i run my rig at 1.49v for 3.6 ghz (55c load/ 30c idle) and 2.3v on the ram for 1100 mhz @ 4-3-4-8 or 1 volt at 2.2 ghz (28c load/18c idle) and 1.85 volt on the ram for 1100 mhz 5-5-5-12 ... it all depends what your overall goal is

Im sure that with the thermalright 120 with 2 xtreme fans you wouldnt have more than 60 degrees in full load....
I with the Scythe Infinity in 2 fans push and pull never get above 47 degrees under full load...And that with 3530mhz....But because i have 2 cores i think that 4 cores would push it about 60-65 degrees under load at 3400 mhz and thats where the thermalright 120 comes in since its better than the scythe thus dropping it at about 60 degrees under full load. ;)
And 4 cores running at 3000mhz vs 4 cores running at 3400 makes quite a difference.

This will also vary depending on what your ambient temp is.

I bet my ambient temp is a lot cooler than 90% or more of this forum. I keep my room around 50-60F during the summer.

Someone lacking heavy A/C during the summer will most definatly have problems with this.
