According to Microsoft, gaming is not what Xbox 360 game consoles are being used for, now-a-days. People's primary usage patterns have shifted more towards listening to music, and watching TV through their Xbox 360 consoles. Gaming on it, comes next. "What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi told the LA Times.

A gaming Console... not for gaming

1_I_Dont_Want_to_Live_on_This_Planet_Anymore-s500x282-295658-580.jpg

i believe it. I have hulu plus and netflix. I pay for the fastest i can get out in the sticks since i moved out of the city. which is 15 down. I dont have cable. I have a movie collection and whatever is on netflix/hulu its cheaper than cable and I watch it all via the consoles (ps3 in room 360/kinect in living room) on any given day I have spent more time playing either or both of those (GF and myself like diffirent shows) then either of us gaming. in fact when people are over they are usually not so interested in playing on my consoles. instead they see what is on TV.

One of my friends used his XBOX to test the Law of Gravity from his 12th floor apartment. So yes, is not for gaming. Agree.

So this sheds light onto what the next gen Xbox is turning into - the ultimate living room entertainment box. Can game, can stream, can rock the house! This certainly seems great for the populace, however not much for us gamers anymore :(

I believe it.

I bought an xboxO + kinect for xmas-1.

It's rubbish. Very rarely used. It is used about twice a week, once to watch a DVD movie 100mins...the other to waste a few minutes no a game waiting for everyone to get ready for the movie 10mins.

Ratio 10:1

After kinect experience (which is the "best" consoles have to offer at the moment)... I will never buy another console again, except an instant on gamer for holiday/summerhouse.

PC gaming is where it is at.

when were consoles ever good for gaming? It was great back in the day of the PS2 PS1 even the OG xbox. but nowadays its a mixed bag of fail. Instead of developing for the console or PC itself they mix both worlds which leads to at launch bugs for both platforms. skyrim crashing on every console known to man. and PC games with almost 0 graphics tuning options because their "ports" imo it isnt "is PC gaming dead" its turned into "is gaming dead?" Lets take a look at trends for a min. What pops up on forums 2 weeks after a game launch. From what iv seen over the past several years it goes something like this.

1 week prior: Now announcing whicked cool game that might have this this and that

Launch day: Wicked cool game review including changes from the pre-release demo

1 week after: After playing the game for a week we reviewd it some more the replay value is this. its a system killer and we have a bunch of screen shots

2 weeks after launch: Help i fell through the floor and I saved what do? Help it crashes ever 10min. Help my xbox blew up. Help my PS3 hardlocks 20min into game.

3 weeks after launch: Patch/Patch/Patch/Patch/Patch

1 month After launch: Patch/Patch review on looking back and how the game is still f@#$%d also $300 DLC 10+ minutes of game play, and if you order now we will ship you a pair of scissors with wicked cool game engraved on them!

This sort of info surely is comprised from more then simple usage statistics, glad I don't have a 360.. and people hook kinects to these things o-O

xbox 360: computerin fer dummies

Yep the reality is that commercialism again ruined gaming like car industry, now not gamers develop games, but accountants and managers. So the sole purpose is to make loads of cash, not to release some great product with innovation and style. They make something flashy, shiny to appeal to users, make great demos and trailers(like the movies) and when you buy the finished product you realize it is not finished, it is some polished turd. Well thanks for all indie games that are rushing to the rescue. Speaking as a gamer for more than 15 years. Easy buck ruins everything. People have to create things with passion, with love, not thinking how much millions to make and how sooner to do it. But then lets hope that the so called "free market" will regulates itself though I doubt it. Peace is a lie there is only passion. :nutkick:

When i had my PS3, I used it to watch netflix 90% of the time.

I gave it to my mom, and she's been watching Netflix on it... 100% of the time.

There you go.

I believe them.
I've been using my xbox primarily as a doorstop ever since it RRoD'd on me a couple of years ago.

You've obviously went through hell with these consoles, I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm pretty sure not everyone's had the same experience as you. Needless to say I do agree that the current gen is already bad for its intended purpose.

strange .........

The last console I had was a sega genesis. The last true console perhaps, alongside SNES, the era of really fun 2D games.

This is how I define current gen consoles: "360 and PS3, holding back graphical advancements since 2005 and counting, with no end in sight. Ruining shooters and driving RTS to near extinction. Enjoy."

Given how dated the hardware is yeah .. . I'll agree

Imagine how far we would be if the consoles had been updated when they originally planned to update them.

My 360...just a glorified DVD player now. PS3...well, now that one still has use. Mostly just an Uncharted/Valkyria console now. Honestly I would still likely use my 360 if it wasn't for XBL. Sub ran out and I see no point in paying M$ money to use a service filled with nothing but horrid players.

I don't use my Xbox for more than just videos that are stored on my main rig and Geometry Wars 2. Other than that, I barely touch it. I haven't really used the Kinect since I got it for Christmas. :wtf:

I use my Xbox mainly for movies, PS3 mainly for gaming(because they're are more RPGs on PS3)

This is the most important factor. Pushing for that 7-10 year life cycle on consoles makes it so people stop gaming on them because there is nothing new or original after 4-5 years.

Let's compare previous generations, 1989-1996 (7 years just like the current situation);

1989: Sega Genesis
1989: TurboGrafx-16
1991: SNES
1993: Atari Jaguar
1993: 3DO
1994: Sony Playstation
1994: Sega Saturn
1995: Nintendo Virtual Boy
1996: Nintendo64

We see more companies, more consoles, and more innovation. Compared to the past 7 years;

2005: Microsoft Xbox360
2006: Nintendo Wii
2006: Sony Playstation 3
2007-2012:

the ps3 is used in our house for netflix and streaming videos i get using ps3 media server. i havnt played a game in it in over a year.

I use the 360 for netflix but the wife uses it for gaming ,music, and netflix...

360 used for movie rentals thats about it. dad might use it for the occasional rock band though...

that netflix is ~10$. I pay the same amount here for 100+ cable tv channels + phone + 50Mbps Internet....hmmm....
