Well, last night I grabbed a retail copy of Mass Effect 2. Stoked to play, I plugged it in as soon as I got home...began the install, plugged in the CD Key, it begins installing, asks for disc 2, I plugged it in, then "Mass Effect 2 installation failed. A data error has occured."

So tried again, only this time the data error occurs on the first disc. After multiple attempts, I am totally at a loss. The error occurs at different portions of the install, so I have a hard time believing it is the disc. I have disabled my A/V, etc. I have searched the web for a resolution and cannot seem to find one, though it appears many people have this same error.

TPU is the best when it comes to solutions, so I thought I would ask the TPU gods for help.

Please HELP...I am DYING to play this game, as the first one was pretty damn good.

If you have more than one optical drive, try installing from the other one. What is the installation error number, if it gave one?

^^ What GT90 said.

Otherwise, try installing in safe mode to eliminate some other possibilities.

I'm 90% sure Windows Installer is disabled in Safe Mode so that won't work. XD

Basically any installer error usually means there's a CRC problem in copying files which inheriently means one of three things:
1) The laser lens is dirty.
2) The disk is dirty.
3) The drive is going bad.

Seeing as it errored on two disks at different locations, #3 is looking the most probable.

It doesn't give an error code...it just states "Data Error occured". The disk and drive are both new, so if that is the problem, I am a little pissed. I will have to try another drive tonight. I have an old IDE laying around somewhere, I just have to try and find an IDE cable laying around.

I googled around and checked the Bioware website. It appears this is somewhat "common" but I haven't found a solution as of yet.

I had problems with getting Mass Effect 2 to start. It installed fine. I don't remember exactly what did (it is in a thread under Games) but I know it involved a reinstall.

Maybe that's just it: EA made an in-house installer instead of relying on trusted installers. The in-house installer doesn't do CRCs and the lot so it prone to error and when it does error, it doesn't give detailed messages. I don't really know but there is clearly problems there.

FYI, my Samsung DVD-ROM was RMA'd twice in the first year (worked then failed to read disks). They finally got one that wasn't defective on the third attempt.

Problem has been solved. IDK what the problem was, but I created ISO's of the disk themselves, and used the ISOs for installing...worked the first time. So for anyone else having the problem, create images of the disk and install from there.

Hope this helps others with the same problem.

JATownes.

Good deal—thanks for posting your conclusion!

Or more simple variant. Use the torrents. You have the key, so DL it from teh bay or smth. Its legal.

I think (correct me if I'm wrong) it's still at least a legally gray area technically, but I would find it hard to find anything really "wrong" with doing that. It's probably the overall best solution in some cases.

Distribution of copyrighted content without a license is illegal. It doesn't matter if you own it or not. The law is black and white there, at least in the USA and most nations that adapted WIPO guidelines.

clean the dvd's
borrow another dvd drive
update dvd drive firmware

How are using torrents easier than creating an ISO? To me creating the ISO was easy, not to mention MUCH quicker than d/ling a torrent.

clean the dvd's
borrow another dvd drive
update dvd drive firmware

Problem has been fixed...It wasn't the DVDs being dirty (they were new), It wasn't the firmware (It was current)...and there was no need to borrow another DVD drive. Created ISO's of the disk and it worked the first time (as stated above) :slap:

Heres my problem. Neither disc's I have work. Put 'em into my laptop, it'll try reading it, nothing happens. Tried opening it from the computer, it just opens the disc with no files...Soooo I'm thinking I got screwed somehow, or theres a problem I'm not seeing.

Part two of this problem, I can't download the game online, or at least I could try but it'll take several days, or months where I'm at (Afghanistan)
Any tips or advice?
