It would be easy for me to just simply say I love the game.. because I do..lol..
Being a huge fan of ME1 I may be predisposed to conclusions.

So I'll break it down.
I'll say the bad stuff first:

1. controls, great for me using ps3 controller and pinnacle profiler, not so great if your using a mouse and keyboard.
Scanning planets = carpal tunnel... XD
Some of the new controls are an obvious port from the xbox.
Mouse sensitivity is to high, try changing it in windows if you come to the same conclusion.

2. They took out crouch, bad idea.. :(..
But implemented a system of using things for cover.
It doesn't feel 100% right to me, but it's ok.

3. Some of the textures, like on the holographic meetings with the counsel look bad.
I just had my first meeting with them and they all looked way to bright and fuzzy, also lacked the definition they had in the first one.

4. When scanning planets, as you revolve around them, the rest of the solar systems planets that are nearby should come into view, but they do not.
If they had come into view it would of added a huge effect to this game.

Now stuff that could go both ways, either good or bad:

1. No more free roam on planets that lacked definition anyway and all seemed to me to just be filler in the first one.
I call it a good thing.
They have replaced that with a nice scanning system and localized areas of interest you can land at.
Which look much better than the textures they could use on an entire planet scale.

2. The diversity of weapons/gear has been replaced with an upgrade and research system dependent on the minerals you mine from planets.
Me, I say it's also a good thing, as micro management of the weapons and armor was a real pain in the ass in the first one.
Simplifying it in a more broadened manner made it seems more RPG to me than
"hey you hit level 40, so here comes some level 40 stuff".

3. I dislike the mission complete music and general feel.
It seems forced and idk, just rubs me wrong maybe, preference thing I guess. XD
It's over so fast, it really doesn't matter anyway though.

4. No more Mako. :(, not that I've seen yet anyway but I'm pretty sure they tossed it out for a landing craft you cannot pilot.
I just miss the Mako is all I guess.
Good times.

Good things: :)

1. Looks spectacular.

2. the storyline is just top notch, I am absolutely loving it.

3. the Cgi is gorgeous.

4. The characters in your team have such deep personalities it really stands out.
Everyone in Me 1 was bland in comparison, excluding Wrex :p.

5. Even scanning, which could be tedious is made at least enjoyable thanks to a very intuitive system.
Your scanner picks up minerals, causing spikes relating to each particular mineral.
launch a probe and wala.

6. Quite a few planets have hidden areas on them to explore.
The locations aren't the same old " a tiny shack with some garbage on the ground" system anymore.
They pop up from time to time, giving you a nice break from the "almost" mundane task of scanning.
which I actually enjoy..lol

7. I'm sure anyone who has looked into it, has heard about the renegade/paragon changes.
Nice how it pops up from time to time in the game, kind of makes ya jump in your seat when ya don't expect it.
Nice thing about it is that it really allows the player to make some very dramatic changes in the way he/she is perceived.
Not to mention the potential impact said reactions could lead to in ME 3. :)
Your decisions actually matter now in the long term, gotta love it.

left click = renegade action.
right click = paragon action.
I think..lol

you'll see the mouse icon come up when one of these "special" scenes happens.
Be careful what you choose, I have a feeling these ones are big.
Just because it says you can do a renegade thing, doesn't mean you should.
Seriously, you might end up punching an old lady right in the face with this game..lol

8. In short, I love it.
I call it a very nice advancement from the first.
Few thing's I'd of done a bit different, but it is extremely enjoyable.
When I'm done with it, I will no doubt love it as much, or more, than ME 1.

9. The game runs smoother in general than ME 1 did.
Longer loads to get the textures out of the way was a good idea.
I run this game all maxed with an 8800 gtx, see my specs.
Runs like a charm.

I play virtually no games twice, I beat them and they sit and gather dust..lol
ME 1.. 5 times, easy.
ME 2... wait and see. :)

This sounds like a point by point summary of likes vs dislikes and the in-between... Don't review games you have not completed. You'll feel silly when you find that they did include the Mako in ME2, but just not in the way you'd think.

Seriously though it's not an attack on you, OP, but completely give something the attention it deserves and think about the choices behind change before you write a review. This is more like a blog entry.

No mako and crouch WTF. mako ruled why would they remove such ting that made ME1 even more fun. Ok you going so far with no leaning ok i can deal with it with ME1 but no crouch.

Pssh very sad to hear and i guess i will get BS2 before thinking of getting ME2(if i ever get it).

Mako was the shit but i dont miss it, it wouldn't have added to the game at all it would just feel like it was added for an extra.

No crouch sucks and having to use space bar for the whole cover system threw me because i was so used to using shift.

Apart from that the games immense, once you get used to the controls they work great but it feels different from the first one control wise but the gameplay and level design is similar so its not completely changed only enough to make it better and different.

Textures are sharp and the whole graphics feel is great, lot of detail in the enviroments and facial movements.

I have to disagree i feel that the mouse and keyboard is a fine control scheme because the keyboard is good for all the commands and the mouse is perfect for aiming, its more to do with the issues of the cover system and the running you have to stop and turn and run again you cant sharp turn mid run.

According to the dev's from ME, the mako's purpose in the game ended up being too filler like and hardly contributed to the game's main and base gameplay plus story.

Sure it was cool to play with it back then, but the way they present it in ME2, would probably make you understand why.

spoilers in white below:
They showed the Mako in the crash landing site of the Normandy SR1. In my own opinion its rightful place, a memory of the different innovations they came up with from ME1 to ME2 without recycling ideas that will drag the game on for irrelevant reasons. It showed that they weren't short of ideas with ME2, that they had plenty. If they were desperate maybe they would have added it back in.

This is my perspective I haven't done any extensive research or anything but if someone wants to prove me wrong go right ahead as my info is based from my own review.

Currently on my second playthrough I'm so glad they let you restart the game from your current level and items found :D.

I thought the mako was quite boring in the first one actually...

My only real complaint would be the all in one command for use/cover/run. It's kind of annoying to try to run away from your current cover to get to a better spot only to fall into cover mode instead of running...
I redirected it to shift too cause space bar for running just felt so unnatural to me.

What i am saying is that they could of improved on it and not be so lame and remove it lol. It was not a bad part of the game so why not use it and it gave a change from the same old same old shi you were else doing.

You docked you talked to people ya got on ya ship then checked a few planets out landed on one drive shoot some shit and then shoot some shit up on foot. Now it's less than that to me anyways.

Yeah I see your point man. If they could have improved planet exploration & the Mako it would have been a nice addition. The game has just so much improvement over ME1 however that it makes the missing mako a trivial issue.

But yeah....Hammerhead DLC? Nice, that will be interesting.

No it's a review "so far".
If you have nothing to say about ME and you just felt like talking to hear yourself speak, please don't.
I have a bad troll bone, that predisposes me to turning into ultramega asshole.

I had 30 hours in this game when I wrote that.
I think that's more than enough time to give a fair review.
And ALL reviews are based on likes and dislikes, that's why their reviews.

By the way, the game just keeps getting better.
Really the story is just amazing.
Loosing the Mako and anything else really amounts to nothing in my book.
The game is just an all around win.

I have played this game for 11 hours so far and i am enjoying it every bit.
Just like doo7 said the characters have more deep personality into the story.
I like the fact you can customize the armors aswell on shepard.
The weapon system is alright but it is kinda lame they are going concept of "ammo" system when they are meant to be far far in future where the word "ammo" don't exist right? thats my thought on the new weapon system by the way.
I like the new graphics and CGI in this game very much,it runs a lot smoother than Mass Effect 1 did from what i can see in my system.
Storyline is excellent and i am really surprised they have "planned" mass effect 3 already.

I told you what I thought of your method. Still haven't found the Mako?

I am just getting into the first one. I am beyond impressed with it so far. Can't wait to finish it and try the second one, but I am wary about Bioware and sequels. KotOR was outstanding, but KotOR 2 was just OK.

Didn't like the first game. Too much of a shooter.

Oh, Kotor 2 was insanely rushed and wasn't even developed by Bioware.

I decided on Mass Effect 1 to be a biotic user rather than gun combat. Tones the shooter aspect down by a ton.
