i have Maxtor 40 GB DiamondMax Plus 8 that i use do backups on. I recently tried to restore a backup from this drive but after installing it and turning the power, it just beeps. windows do eventually boot up but nowhere does it detect this disk. not in the bios, not in the disk manager. i would like to restore this backup but is more interested in this error as i have never come across something like this. has anyone else?

Maxtor drive beeps

Have a similiar situation using a DiamondMax Plus 8, 20GB Mfg Date 4/15/03. Drive used as a second system drive. Drive is recognized in boot menu but not in drive list. Drive is always connected. Computer started locking up for several seconds at a time. Chkdsk on drives and couldn't find that drive. Removed drive from bay to make sure connections were ok and heard the beeping. Shutdown and restart and never got to windows screen. Restarted several times then saw drive in boot menu and Windows loaded but Maxtor not in drive menu. When recognized in boot menu, computer will start but beeps and is not found.

Tried kicking it real hard but no improvement. Any suggestions?

Check if the jumper is in the right position or if you have lost it alltogether.

Drive was a viable OS drive with WinXP/SP3. Drive behaves the same, when setup as master, slave or cable select positions with appropriate jumper settings for each. Set as master, with SATA drive and WD backup drive disconnected (power & data), BIOS recognizes the drive but Windows will not load. Using the WinXP bootable install disk as the initial start drive, it tells me no drive is connected, but the Maxtor continues to click away. Incidentally, one of the links I found was to UTube where there are 20 or 30 vid's on the various noises, beeps and clicks made by Maxter HDD's are listed. Several of which approach music.

Same here. The jumper position didn't make any difference. I would like to know if this Hdd has a build in speaker or where does the beep came from?

Yes they do. I've heard several Maxtor drives emit a beep or little "song" upon failure or an issue.
