MB doesn't detect 2nd graphic card in PCI_E4

Hello,

I have been trying to use 2 NVIDIA graphic cards at the same time without success.
I have the following configuration
- MB: MSI X470 GAMING PLUS MAX
- Ryzen 3 3200g
- 2 EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB
- 2 MSI Gaming trio GeForce RTX 3070

I am trying to at least connect 2 of these cards.
All of them work correctly in slot PCI_E1 but none of them work on PCI_E4. I have tried placing the 2x3070 (PCI_E1 and PCI_E4), the 2x3060 (PCI_E1 and PCI_E4), only the 3070 in Slot PCI_E4 and only the 3060 in slot PCI_E4. I thought it could be a slot problem so I changed the motherboard (to another one with the same reference) but still the card in PCI_E4 isn't detected by BIOS.
I upgraded the BIOS to latest version.
PCI_E1 Lanes Configuration only have x4+x4 and auto options.

Any idea of how to make this work?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried running your system with only one card in PCI_E4? If it works then it honestly sounds like MSI have done something dirty by not allowing you to run two Nvidia cards for non gaming purposes.

--- if you are trying to use them for gaming. The board doesnt support SLi. Thats why im pointing the finger at MSI doing something dodgy at the bios level to stop you plugging two Nvidia cards in.

Thanks for your reply.
I have tried running my system with only one card in PCI_E4 and it doesn't work.
A friend of mine has the same MB and running 4 cards - 2x3060, 1x3070 and another one I don't remember now. The only difference is that he has Ryzen 3 3100, so I don't think
The problem I am having is also happening to another friend. Same board, same processor.

What's the rest if your specs friend

What hard drives are you using, have you checked how many PCI-e lanes the APU has?

it has 12x lanes as far as I am awear

its not even capable of running a gpu at 16x
and I have the chip

Did you ever resolve this issue??? I have same issue.

I put dual 3060 in my msi b450 gaming plus max with ryzen 5 5600x and it recognized both. Im trying a 3060 and 3060ti on x470 gaming plus max and ryzen 5 2600x and the one in slot 4 isnt recognized.

I am not using apu just 2600x is it a setting in bios looking for apu or something maybe

Have you even verified the specific cards in question are even working in a different slot?

Did you checked twice your bios settings maybe you turned off second PCIe slot?Or maybe IF you using NVME drive that slot turned off automatically?

Sadly slots configured in auto or gen 3 or 2 still doesnt work. and only have ssd in sata port 1

Get your motherboard manual out and start reading about the PCI Express slot configuration and also your bios settings and then also update your Motherboard bios.

If that does not resolve your problem I would suggest getting rid of that motherboard

I agree with @eidairaman1 also check that PCIe slot maybe there is some dust, dirt or something that blocking pins.....if nothing works seems like that PCIe slot is kaput....GL

So any luck?

Using an APU gets you 8x/0x mode - the second slot has NO lanes assigned and will never work.
Otherwise, using other ports on the boards can disable things... read your manuals.

So anwering the OP and his MSI x470 board:
  • Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics and 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Graphics Processors support x8/ x0 mode
  • 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCIE_6, supports x4 mode)1
  • 3 x PCIe 2.0 x1 slots
  1. PCI_E6 slot will be unavailable when installing M.2 PCIe SSD in M2_2 slot.
  2. SATA1 port will be unavailable when installing SATA M.2 SSD in M2_2 slot.
  3. PCI_E6 slot will be unavailable when installing PCIe M.2 SSD in M2_2 slot.

Aries535 did a thread hijack (rude) with different hardware, but it also has a whole bunch of warnings
  • 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slot (PCI_E1)
    • 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™ support x16 mode
    • Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics and 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Graphics support x8 mode
    • Athlon™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics support x4 mode
  • 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCI_E4, supports x4 mode)1
  • 4 x PCIe 2.0 x1 slots1
  1. PCI_E4 will run x1 speed when installing devices in PCI_E2/ PCI_E3/ PCI_E5 slot.

Time for a better board, not msi based...

It's first gen zen boards, they had limited 3.0 lanes and then limited 2.0 off the chipset

Things got better every gen, til x570 being all 'wooo pci-e 4.0 for everything'

I found details about the board both users must review these details carefully, m.2 screws things up too.

Ive looked over those a few times im pretty sure it should work with my setup. No m.2 disabling any lanes just ssd in sata port 1. And cards are in correct slot. And ryzen 5 2600x has no integrated graphics so should support the 8x8 in the two slots like in document. I believe my second slot that the gpu goes in is somehow dead since i cant get any card to post on it. Just whatever one you put in the first slot posts. I am sorry for the hijack not too into all the web forum does n donts. I just saw it was directly related for the most part to my issue but I think his problem was the apu disabling his second slot. Not 100% sure the issue on mine. Thank yall for the help. Much appreciated.

Make sure you have no bent cpu pins and clean all pcie slots out, make sure cards are fully inserted and squared in the slot

Are you using two GPU's? Whats in the first slot when you're using the second?
And obviously, is the second GPU powered correctly with PCI-E power cables?

Replace the motherboard

I swapped psu in my two systems so i can run the 3060ti and 3060 on b450 and have adequate power and am just running the single 3060 with x470 board. All is running top notch with that setup. Im sure something is somewhat wrong with the x470 but it is working for what i need.
