Microsoft in Talks to Acquire Discord for $10 Billion

Don't worry Discord Lovers, they'll give it at least as much care and feeding as they gave Mixer.

Looks like we're required to prepare to jump ship!

Discord went to crap the moment they started to ban groups and people for political reasons.
I call BS on this, you'll have to show proof to back that up.

Erm, no... As you are here you know how to use the internet, go use it.
Generally speaking here, we expect people who post theories and postulates to back up their own statements with proof, not just throw around noise and then say "Of course it's true, but I don't have to prove it!". I believe the colloquial is "Put up, or shut up". Otherwise, you may find yourself in violation of several of the forums guidelines, including, but not limited to:

Healthy debates will generally be allowed if the following criteria is met.
  • Useful sources and constructive wording.

and
  • Posting "FUD" (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt), especially if the poster is trying to pass it off as legitimate news.

Thanks!

On the topic itself, I am hopeful this falls thru. I don't see how this could be overall good for the Discord community.

For example, TheDonald, plus several small groups.

As you have kindly responded to me, why have you not deleted the serious accusation/implication by R-T-B that I am racist. Thank you.

I did use the internet, to find that the reasons were not political, rather ToS violations.
More recent bans still fall under the same category.
"Terms of Service" bans that only affect one part of the political spectrum but allow others is literal political censorship.!

Some people are perfectly happy to have their political opponents banned, but not those on their political side, I personally follow the rule of:

"I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It".

Taking this to PM, as it is straying from the topic. Please stick to the topic of the ramifications and/or benefits of a Microsoft takeover of Discord :)

Back to Teamspeak. Not really a fan of big corporations gobbling up smaller companies that start to make an impact on their own(Minecraft, Whatsapp, Instagram, etc). Doesn't seem to be in the true spirit of competition when you are so big you just buy the company instead of creating your own product.

Just how the world works there is no such thing as Fair in business.

And 90% of people will sell their companies if offered millions or in this case billions.

Minecraft's story is different. Notch grew frustrated with the community and quit. The $5 Billion buyout price / $2.5 Billion to Notch personally probably made a sweet retirement bonus, but Notch's drama with being the leader of a multiplayer game / online hangout spot was pretty well known. Notch was also pretty sure that $5 Billion under valued Minecraft (and I agree with him on that front: Minecraft was making hundreds-of-millions in profits, still does. A buyout price of $5 billion was closer to a standard established company PE of ~20, not a small startup like Minecraft). At the size that Minecraft got, it was less about features and games anymore, and more about political situations that your employees make / moderation team makes. That's the kind of scrutiny that a indie-game developer like Notch doesn't want.

Other companies, like Whatsapp, build their company from the ground up with the explicit goal of being either acquired or IPO'd. The $5 Billion / $10 Billion or... in the most recent case: $40 Billion (Roblox IPO) situations just show how profitable this strategy is.

SV companies are famous for the strategy: you build an initial minimum viable product. You get angel-investments of ~$100 Million or so to scale up. You generate hype and then go for the final acquisition above $1 Billion ("Become a Unicorn", which is becoming more and more common as technologists are figuring out the formula better-and-better each year).

------------

Discord was seeking venture capitalist money way back in 2016 (WarnerMedia's $20 million investment). Its clear Discord seeked the highly-profitable, highly-risky "become unicorn" strategy.
