Asked if Xbox is still growing at this "late stage in a console lifecycle", Lewis said:

"We see it as about halfway through. But yes you are right, Xbox is defying the normal curve you might expect. There's no doubt that Kinect put a huge shot of adrenaline into the business.

"We see it as about halfway through. But yes you are right, Xbox is defying the normal curve you might expect. There's no doubt that Kinect put a huge shot of adrenaline into the business.

"What we are now seeing is massive swathes of families and younger audiences flocking to it. As you saw at the press conference, we are now in line with what we projected at E3 2010."

Lewis went on to explain that Microsoft deliberately focused on families and kids first with Kinect, and now it's moving on to provide "complimentary" experiences for core gamers.

"What you won't see is us contriving that," he said. "What you will see is us using Kinect to enhance the experience and not detract from it. I don't think our core gamers will tolerate anything else from us."

The 360 still has a long way to go i guess.

how the hell is 6 years old a halfway point for a console? that's well passed eol.

Nintendo

NES>SNES = 5 years

SNES>Nintendo 64 = 6 years

Nintendo 64>Nintendo Gamecube = 5 years

Nintendo gamecube> Wii = 5 years.

Wii> Wii U = 6 years

Sony

PS>PS2 = 6 years
PS2>PS3= 6 years
PS3>PS4 =?? 8 years? wtf?

Microsoft

Xbox>Xbox360 = 4 years
Xbox 360 > ??? = 10 years? wtf?

Sega was like nintendo and pretty consistent on their launches until they pulled out. But seriously nintendo has been ontrakc with every generation releasing it 5-6 years out each time. And now that technology is turning over faster and fster nintendo has stuck to that release shcedule, while microsoft who started out with a 4 year launch schedule has now fallen off of the release cliff.

sony also seems to be off schedule, but to be fair if they hit the expected 2014 launch it'll be only 2 years late. Unlike the enxt xbox which will be 6 years late based on their prospected 2015 slot, that's over a full console behind schedule.

Actually, Microsoft were forced to cease production of the Xbox after nVidia walked out of talks to lower the price of the GPU and said they wouldn't make any more. They had planned to keep it around for longer.

Kinect maybe have changed it's outlook some, but that shouldn't change it's end of life. Sure they can bring more interactive games to the market, but 360 banks of plays wanting more demanding games than volleyball.

It's usually who makes the first move.. then everybody else follows. Hopefully Nintendo's new console next year forces Sony and Microsoft to speed up there console cycle. Microsoft would like everyone to think the 360 is at it halfway point. I bet sony and Microsoft both have something in development.

i agree, that is bullshit. How much money do we need to pay? 1. Xbox 2. Internet 3. A game 4. TV 5. Electricity bills. That is even without the Xbox Live

PS3? They share a lot of the titles now and the PS3 exclusive list is better. I rarely play my consoles anymore, so paying to have online multiplayer makes no sense for me.

You all sound surprised by this extension of lifecycle [thanks to Kinect], however, Nintendo did the same thing already. They launched the Gamecube in 2001, and then added motion controls to (what is primarily) the same console, giving it a longer lifecycle (2001-2012 essentially). Now Microsoft wants to mimic that approach, but without shafting all their gamers not interested in the motion control scheme.

You're welcome to disagree with my view of the Wii being more or less a Gamecube refresh with motion controls, but that is my personal view. And from a financial/business standpoint, I can't say anything against Nintendo's decision to do that.

People don't want to buy new consoles and companies want to get more out of their investment. So you end up with 10 year life spans... and flops like the dreamcast and wii u. Timing makes the difference. It's when the majority of console brands are updating that people gear up to buy them. The inbetweeners just never do well.

truth, I was comparing an eol to the next gen release so while 10-12 years isn't a bad eol, it's a really bas time between releases.

yea it seems like they're gonna be sucking nintendo's dust for a good 5 years before they can even come to the table and compete, My Wii is sitting in my attic right now though, but if nintendo can pull off some nice action and rpg games, I would have no problem sticking my 360 in the attic.
